You can talk about your best teams, your newcoming teams, the best players or YOUR best players and so on, but there haven't been much talk about just how much injuries are effecting this World Cup. Yes, there have been some, but there haven't been much talking in depth about the situation. Injuries are one thing in life that we just can't help (unless we sat in our houses all day with injury protective suits on, which of course, we don't do) and we have to live with injuries. Football is a dangerous sport. It's not meant to be a contact sport, but injuries can be sustained in the form of a pulled muscle, or a broken bone from tripping, and that is how most of the players that are injured this World Cup had got injured.

Robert Pires (Arsenal and France) is a prime example. He was injured earlier in the season while playing for Arsenal in the Premiership. His injury was quite a bad one, and he had to miss the rest of the season, and he had to be dropped from the French squad. That's something he didn't want, his fellow players didn't want, his manager didn't want and all his supporters didn't want. He couldn't help getting injured, and none of us could have helped it either, but it happened, and that's just the sort of thing that could happen to anyone in football....

David Beckham (Man United and England) isn't out for the World Cup, but when he got a broken toe against Deportivo in the Champions League many fans were hoping that it wouldn't be bad enough to let him miss the World Cup. It would have been a shock for England if he couldn't play. This time, it wasn't his fault. He was hacked down by a Deportivo player, and of course, no-one liked the fact that the player didn't even recieve a fine of suspension. England's best player for the World Cup (in my opinion) nearly missed it, and the offender was left to go free. That's just the sort of thing that can happen to anyone in football....

Zinedine Zidane (Real Madrid and France) isn't out for all the World Cup either. He has a small injury, but one that, if he agrivates it at the World Cup, it could leave him out for the rest of the tournament. He is already missing the first 2 group games for France, but if France are already through by the third game, they will be unlikely to play him so as not to agrivate his injury. If Zidane does, at any point, re-injure himself then we might not see, for some people, the star of the tournament. Zidane couldn't help himself getting injured. That's just the sort of thing that can happen in football....

There are other players that are either out for the World Cup that have had injuries or sometimes just bad injury scares. Freddie Ljungberg could miss Sweden's opening games due to an injury he picked up. Francesco Totti might not be fully fit after coming back from an injury he had before the World Cup. Fernando Morientes has had a shock in the past couple of days. He was suspected of having a very bad muscle pull that would make him miss out on the whole World Cup, but luckily it was only a scare. Hopefully no one else that is of great importance to their team will suffer an injury that could ruin their dream of playing in the first World Cup of our new millenium.

But they COULD, as that's just the sort of thing that can happen in football.

That's one I was going to mention. I read it in this Fotball Facts book.

If there's one reason as to why I wouldn't definitley become a World Class star footballer, it's because of all the injuries and dirty players you get!

With rediculous lunges every now and again, and how we keep hearing about new and effortless ways of getting injured, that just starts to take all the fun away from playing football.

Did you hear about Kevin Phillips a few years ago???
He seriously damaged his knee ligament by just simly reaching for the TV remote whilst sitting down at home! That's scary!!

I also remember something about Alun Armstrong when he was at Middlesbrough.
All the players were just going along a course where you had to simply just over normal sticks - going side-to-side, when suddenly *SNAP* - he heard a loud snap in his leg and later realised his leg was broken!
And all he was doing was simply jumping sticks, side-to-side!

You'd never believe those if you read them in the paper with no pictures or actual evidence! I always think about that Armstrong incident now whenever i'm doing something like that! :S

Have you also noticed how such a large majoritiy of the injured World Cup stars play in the Premiership???
That links in with my 'Burnout' topic.
