I started a post a few weeks back that I kept getting the message 'Dangerously Low on Resources' on my Laptop every now and then, especially when trying to load up applications. It wasn't anything to do with the multi tasking as I dont do much of that on my system and closed everthing on startup to free up the system - just to make sure.

However the problem persisted and I was told to upgrade to Windows 2K from Windows ME. I have done that and the message is now gone, however Win 2k does not detect my internal modem, sound card and has now a few other files that are not compatible because of Win2k being a new version of windows than my old one.

Now im thinking about using my Windows ME Back up CD to re-install ME just to get the damn thing back to normal again or I could contact the manufacturer and get the drivers/files I need to make the laptop detect them, however the manufacturer was/is Tiny who have been taken over by Time and they have messed around many customers in terms of warrenties/gurantees, they had lost my laptop at one instance when I sent it in for sevicing and it took me 3 months to get it back...

They may ask for it to be sent in again because there are quite a few files that need changing to new ones just to make Win 2k detect them, and im not sure if I trust them enough to do that...

So with that in mind what do you think I should do?

Much appreciated with your help.

Neo.

This is a bit after the fact but if the 'running dangerously low on resources' warning no longer appears in Win 2000 then it almost certainly wasn't a hardware problem. At a guess I'd say that your virtual memory settings got screwed up somehow: in which case, changing the setup in the control panel would have sorted the problem. Whatever: there was no need to install Win 2000 (apart from it being a better OS) without first troubleshooting ME. And, as a general piece of advice, NEVER change an OS without first getting the relevant drivers for your system and sticking them on a cd or floppy.

Still, you're there now! I'd say that reinstalling your original OS would be a bad idea: if you have a weird modem then the drivers were probably pre-installed rather than being part of Windows. Chances are you'll have the same problem.

Checking your manuals etc for part names/manufacturers is a good idea but unfortunately modems are just about the WORST thing to lose a driver for. There are so many crackpot manufacturers and rebranded mystery cards that it can be a real pain getting an unidentified modem going. Good luck!

As I said above I have tried closing all applications upto the point where there was only the systray and explorer running therefor its not the reason that too many apps are opened together because I solved that, but still had that problem only when opening Microsoft Word, therefore its only specific applications, the problem has gone away now because Win2k is more balanced than but that has led problems to internal modem etc not being detected

Yeah. That's good advice.

Being "dangerously low on resources" usually means that you are low on memory (your open applications are taking up most of the available memory), or maybe you have a faulty memory chip. I think whoever advised you to install Win2k should be shot because it is probably more processor and memory intensive than WinME, which means you have even less resources given over to your applications, and now you have spent time and money upgrading, to still have problems!

Anyway, never tried "downgrading" a machine before, but if you can't find the drivers you need then it is probably a good idea to get the system back to something like you had before. Then, add some more memory and see what happens.

Do you get the error message when you try to open specific appliactions? Or when you have lots of applications open? If so, try not to do too much at once, PC's have limits y' know.

Do you know what makes the various bits are? ie soundcard = creative labs for instance and also the model, try getting the latest drivers off of the net and installing them. Win2k has been out for a while now and most manufacturers have had a chance to re-write their drivers for the various parts.

If you don't know, try taking it apart, if you can or get someone who knows what they're doing with laptops to have a look.

Is it not possible to downgrade to Windows 98? I have not upgraded mine as this OS seems to do the job well and nearly all hardware has drivers for it as it has been round for so long. 98 Second Edition is your best bet if you can get hold of a copy.
