I'd like to elaborate on a topic that I wrote about in a letter that was printed as the 'Star Letter' in the magazine NGC (issue 68), a topic based on Shigsy's comments that 'talking about games is part of the gameplay' NGC, Issue 66). In the letter I said that 'waiting [for games/consoles] fuels much of what is great about gaming'. These words have become even more true for me recently as I am now the proud owner of Super Smash Bros Melee, but unfortunately don't have a Gamecube to play it on (nor am I likely to be able to afford one for a long time - being a parent is a bloody expensive business!). I suppose you could call me a 'minimalist' Gamecube owner, in that I enjoy the games, read the reviews, enjoy writing/talking about the machine; but don't actually own a Gamecube!

In the interview that I referred to in the letter, Shigsy also mentioned the fact that he thought that people were already beginning to experience the new Gamecube Zelda game through the discussions and debates that had arisen from the new cel-shaded look. I agree completely with this; by the time we actually get to play on the new Zelda game we'll be so familiar with the look, the feel of the game and the discussions surrounding it that the actual experience of playing it is bound to be more intense. I found that this was true with Perfect Dark; the months of speculation, previews, screen-shots and discussions about the game made the game much more enjoyable when I actually played the game.

At the moment I actually hardly spend any of my personal time playing on computer games - on any platform - but I would say that I am more into gaming now than I have ever been. Writing pieces like this, talking to friends and colleagues about games, reading magazines like NGC; all of these things enrich the gaming experience for me in such a way that at times the actual playing of games is only a small part of the whole experience.

Does anybody else feel like this? Are there any other 'minimalist' Gamecube owners out there who enjoy games without actually having to play them that often, or even without owning a Gamecube! And do people think that we are already experiencing Zelda, Mario, Starfox Adventures, et. al through the debates surrounding them?

Cheers all,

I think in a way, we all have been doing this in the months up to the cube's launch. Provided you seperate cube anticipation from gaming on any old console.

And it was great : )

I've lasted about a year and a half, talking about the "upcoming Gamecube" on this site.

Now it's released, and I can't buy one until my exams are done! :-D

It's fun talking about games but I avoid too much gaming news because it often spoils many of the surprises.

But can you enjoy gaming without owning a current console (i.e. Playstation 2, X-Box, Gamecube or Gameboy Advance). That is the situation that I'm in now. I'm finding that I can still enjoy the chat, reviews, news and info. I pick up on websites and in magazines without owning a Gamecube. But on the other hand, I'm still keen to get a Gamecube as soon as possible as I'm keen to actually experience the games themselves. But when/if I get a Gamecube, I know that I'll still be desperate to get the next thing that comes out.

I feel that we as gamers, even minimalist gamecube owners, are beginning to experience the new games on the way even though they haven't been released yet. This is especially true for me when it comes to Starfox Adventures, Soul Calibur 2 and Jet Set Radio Future, these games all look great and their predecessors were all amazing. With the new out of craft aspect of Starfox it has put it at the top of my most wanted list as I feel this will add a whole new dimension to the Starfox gaming experience thanks to Rare and Nintendo.
I'm also beginning to feel titles like Mario Sunshine and Zelda(Even though I'm still not used to the new look, see Zelda GC looks... topic) both these games are going to be great gameplay wise, as we have come to expect from Nintendo.
On a final note, I found the experience of playing Wave Race: Blue Storm much more enjoyable just because I'd seen screenshot and videos a lot before the gamecube was released and it increased my anticipation of what the game was going to be like.
