Nintendo have said it so many times lately, “The biggest software line up of the year”, and after several interviews with both Shiguru Miyamoto I can have a good guess about what Nintendo will be claiming next year. Yes this is a post about the immediate future of Nintendo (A future of gaming topic in the future of gaming section my god!), in immediate I mean the next two years.
This year will hold strong as the strongest Software line up in history, never before have 3 massive Nintendo titles been released within a year of each other on the same console. And when I say massive I’m talking about humongous proportions. The three games in question, Metroid Prime, The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Sunshine. People don’t truly comprehend how big these games will be, people started to question how good Metroid Prime and Zelda and even Mario was but after play tests at E3 people have come away smiling, Nintendo have done it again. Nintendo are a busy bunch lately, their ambitions for the next 365 days are so high that they haven’t the time or the staff to make all the games they want. Now it is time for Nintendo to offer opportunities second parties can’t refuse and favors to call in from third parties. One of the games this year that will truly be great is F Zero, a game Nintendo can’t find room for and so called in Amusement vision to make it for them. Yes RARE are making Starfox but even that wont satisfy big Starfox veterans and so Namco volunteer to head off this franchise. Even Retro had to make Metroid after all.
Sadly in order to prove to the world that this time next year the Gamecube will be the best the Gameboy Advance has had to suffer with upgrades of old SNES games but luckily the support is high enough from third parties that the neglect from Nintendo is barley visible. This time next year (or just a little later) these are the games we will be playing direct from Nintendo and their second parties:
The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, Starfox Adventures, Eternal Darkness, Animal Crossing, F Zero, Starfox, Wario’s World, Mario Party 4, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis and they’re just the big name titles. In fact we didn’t even get that much in the entire of the N64’s life, you’re spoiling us Nintendo. This is a big software line up with at least 5 essential games there, the big 3 and then another 2 depending on preference. This is an impressive year, Metroid Prime will see the light of day by Christmas and now I really cannot wait a game so gorgeous that Halo is even doing a runner. Super Mario Sunshine is shaping up beautifully and The Legend of Zelda well if the new videos haven’t persuaded you that this is the best game ever then something is definatly wrong in your mind. And that is excluding third party masterpieces like Resident Evil and Turok Evolution.
So what of May 2003, what about the next E3, what will Nintendo promise for the next year. Can they really triumph over the stunning line up this year? Well no they’re not trying to, as Resi Evil Fan once said: “Nintendo release all their best titles in the first year”, not actually true but not far off the mark, indeed after this year has gone we won’t be seeing much more of Fox, Mario’s main adventures will be multiplayer games and Zelda won’t re-surface for a good 2 years or so. And so are we about to see a gaming Nintendo drought, are Nintendo going to do in the May 2003 – May 2004 gap what happened soon after the N64’s launch? Nintendo have said they can’t top this year, but then again it is only commercially a good year. Yes Nintendo have re-invented Metroid and Zelda with their new styles but as for new Nintendo stars all we have is the Pikmin game. Next year is when Nintendo will show their originality, original games will be hitting the shop shelves, no new Zelda adventures or Mario Platformers but games like Roll a Rama, Donkey Kong +, Stage Debut, Doshin the Giant etc… other than Donkey Kong+ not massive titles. And how do I know this? Because Shiguru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata told me (well they told Nintendo Power who in turn told me), and that isn’t just GBA connectivity (although that plays a large part in it all) but original new ideas like Pikmin and Luigi’s Mansion.
This means that after a year of our favourite characters we get a year filled with brand new, intriguing and interesting titles, and with connectivity being so important a few actually new Nintendo GBA games.

It could be said that these ggames, apparently Nintendo's best games will be released within a 6 month period, or just over that between Mario Sunshine and Zelda. It seems ridiculous, to be honest, given that we only had one Mario adventure and 2 Zelda's in the entire life of the N64.
It seems that Nintendo may let their second parties do much of the donkey work for their established characters, whilst they set about creating the franchises of tomorrow.
Does that mean a Pikmin sequel could come from someone other than Nintendo themselves?
It's a shame that the immediate future is a little sparse. After Pikmin, in June, there's not much for us in Europe to look forward to until September, but then it all kicks off again.
In the near future there are loads of games I'd love to have. Mario Sunshine, Zelda, Eternal Darkness, Animal Crossing, Bomberman Generations, Mario Party 4, Mickey Mouse Magical Mirror, Starfox, Wario World. What games are rare bringing out?
Yeah - It'd ve cool if you went with some mates to help you as well, as part of the team that was originaly supposed to stop the aliens, not just you - You could play with the computer or with your friends on the bloomin hard missions!
Can you imagine Body Harvest with Resi Evil graphics? No, neither can I, but it would sure be nice!

DMA design made Body Harvest, it was a fantastic game but very badly made. A sequel would be fantastic. Or a prequel, before the aliens had actually totally conquered the Earth...
Body Harvest is a must, but they have to expand almost every aspect of the game from the original if they want to stand a chance -- looking back at the orignal, it seems like a poorly made game, even in its time.
Totally agree Blast Corps would rule on Gamecube, also need a Body Harvest update though I haven't a clue who that was made by.
Majora's Mask was great.
It wasn't a Orcarina of Time beater but it was a fantastic spin-off none-the-less!
Anyway, although Nintendo seem to be throwing out everything they have in the first year (presumably to get plenty of early sales), perhaps then they'll bring out a whole load of new original franchises.
I think Rare have a few things in the works too.
That reminds me, we need to start a petition begging for a Blast Corps update.
It wasn't a Orcarina of Time beater but it was a fantastic spin-off none-the-less!
