The lazy readers around this forum will read my first paragraph then reply with a barrage of insults, claims of greatness and 'PS2 rulez' statements. If you want to make yourself look clever, or not look like a fool, read the whole damn thing. Nothing angers me more than lazy readers, or people who read the first paragraph then reply with something that I've written later on in the topic.

Righty, now that that little annoyance has been sorted, only decent, honest posters will be left reading this. So what am I talking about? The PlayStation 2, of course (that's why I'm here). This is my story...

The first next generation console that I owned, like many many other people was a PlayStation 2. At the time, I thought it was great - Smuggler's Run was a right royal laugh, Dark Cloud was perfect for me, since I loved Zelda on the N64, and SSX was also brilliant. And I loved my PlayStation 2, right through the frankly hectic Christmas period up until around about February of this year. I just got bored.

With such a lacklustre release schedule over the next few months, I saw it within my limits to actually buy Rez, something which I wouldn't have bought had it have been released in November or December the previous year. After a sub-one hour finish and a slight disappiontment, I got a refund and sat on my chair, in my brightly lit room trying to get through an import copy of Golden Sun on my GameBoy Advance. I was THAT bored with my PS2.

And then came the Xbox. After hiring out an Xbox and witnessing the sheer delights of Halo, I decided I'd have to buy an Xbox. Throwing aside initial preoccupations with selling my PS2, I snapped up an Xbox during my holiday to Australia for the ridiculous price of £210. Remember, this was before the price drop so I was still entitled to the reward pack. High value for money, if you ask me, especially since I bought it for the equivalent of 2/3 of a PS2 (including cost of reward pack) PLUS with a hard drive, often rumoured to be as much as £110.

Halo wowed me for weeks, Oddworld wowed me for months. Then surprise surprise, I got bored of my Xbox. Its a usual case of post-launch game blockage, since the launch Xbox games were pretty slim in greatness. Not to worry, because only a few weeks after that, the GameCube came out and my dad (loving as he is) bought me one.

By now you can guess that my PlayStation 2 was gathering dust in the top of my wardrobe - great games were all but non-existant by now for the machine, and with the awesomelly betterness of the GameCube and Xbox, I couldn't give a damn. Even now I hold my GameCube in a much higher regard to my PS2, so abuse me if you will but that's the fact.

And then came Final Fantasy 10. Down came the PS2, in went the disc and I played. And played. And played some more. Its great. I love it. And for some reason, now I love my PlayStation 2. It shows that great games CAN change your opinion of a console - I'm sure if any of you sonyphiles (as you are annoyingly dubbed) play Halo, you'll find it brilliant fun. And the same goes for Super Smash Bros Melee. I now believe the fact that it is the games that make or break a console. I understand why Sega went down - lack of games. The ones out may have been great quality, but in this gaming industry it has to be quantity over quality.

The PSone beat the N64 hands down because of many games available. But I beleive that in this next generation race, this may not be the case. PS2 has tonnes of games, but the ratio of good to bad is very distinctive - something along the lines of about 30:1. And due to this negative factor, and inferior technology of the PS2, I hated it. Thanks to the brilliance that is Final Fantasy 10, I love it.

Games make or break a console. In the gaming industry, its quantity over quality which will bring in the casual masses. I've only recently found out that, despite this rock-solid theory, quality still exists in the sea of mediocrity. Final Fantasy is brilliant. Final Fantasy made the PlayStation2 my Marmite - I did hate it, but now I love it.

I understand that consoles appeal to people depending on what genres they like, but in the release schedule you mentioned, all the games are either action/adventure or driving games. I'm not entirely specific in the games that I like, but what I don't like are simulation games like Gran Turismo and Colin McRae. If you can see where I'm coming from, perhaps you'll see what I mean when I say the release schedule is pretty bleak.

Mind you, this time of the year is renowned with minimal games released.

In response to Pro Evo as well, I think that FF10 is the only game that makes me keep my PlayStation2. I don't like GT3 because it isn't my kinda thing, the same goes for Metal Gear Solid. GTA3 is a great game, but I've got it on PC, Devil May Cry is brilliant, I admit it, but I used to have it and finished it, then never went back.

At the moment, I only have four PS2 games - SSX Tricky, TH3, FF10 and GTA3. They're the only ones I hail as 'great' and since three of them are available on other formats which I own, it kinda makes my PS2 redundant. I don't say it isn't a great console, but this all comes back to the 'exclusive' games issue, and why people should buy each console. If every game was on every console, nobody would get a PS2 because it is the least as good in terms of technology. And with the way things going, a lot of games are becoming multiformat.

Oh, and when I mentioned about the forums, I meant SR as a whole, not just PS2. There are plenty of people who don't read the whole thing, all over ukdiscussions.com. I'm not incriminating the PS2 masses alone.

½pint makes a very good point, that it's the games that, at the end of the day, will make or break a console. I sat out much of the past two console wars, the last console I bought being a PSX, and then only when FF7 came out.

Well, I became disenchanted with FF7 and 8, and I didn't bother with 9. The PSX sat unused and I concentrated my "console" gaming efforts on the FF games for Game Boy. I _might_ return to FF when (IF!) they return to the fantasy background (like the rumour mill about FF11 is saying).

Now, out of the new generation consoles, the only one I bought was a Gamecube, because looking at the lineups, it's the only console that has games that I'm particularly interested in. As noted elsewhere in this forum, the only element that has me interested in the PS2 is the Linux kit.

And it will take a LOT more than Halo to persuade me to shell out money for an Xbox!

If you look at the Nintendo and Microsoft fora, you may notice that there is a LOT of bashing from one side to the other, and most of it is just puerile. Fortunately the PS forum has largely escaped that.

If you want to determine the best console for you, look at the game lineups, read previews and reviews, see which one offers the best of games that you're interested in... go for it... and enjoy!

But then, I get the feeling that I'm preaching to the converted here...

I see what you are saying there and agree mostly but at the end of the day it isn't the console you are losing interest in, it's the games.

If Halo and Munch's Odeysee had been released for PS2 you would have been playing on that for those two / three weeks instead of the X box and had just as much enjoyment.

I think the thing that is going to finish of this so called "Console war" is going to be the multi platform releases that are now becoming more and more common.

Who is eally going to want to buy an X box while there are only 2 AAA titles and everything else that they want is also availible on their PS2 or GC ? Good quality exclusives are the things that will keep sales of individual consoles going.

At the moment I am playing on my PS2 and GC just as much as each other, after all they are "different" consoles. When I want some plain outrageous fun I can stick on Super Smash Bros or Monkey Ball, If I want some footie action out comes Pro Evo and then I can have a spin on GT3 or kill a few hoods in GTA3.

All enjoyable games and ones that will keep me going back to both consoles for a long time to come.

Yeah i know what you mean and FFX will make anyone like a console but didn't you think of getting other game like GTA3, MGS2, DMC, GT3? there all very good. I don't see my self getting another console not that i have the money but because im happy with the one ive got the PS2 has never got boring for me i difn't get it on the release date so thats probably why i got mine when GTA3 came i remember talking to people about it here that was exciting waiting for my console, so i suppose GTA3 got me to get my PS2 your theory is proved very well done

Before I reply, can I just say, that as an avid hater of Marmite, that there is no way, NO WAY, that I will ever like it in the future. So from my perspective, they are not in common.

:D

I agree what you mean about games gave to be quantity over quality, to appeal to the masses. I personally feel that Dreamcast had enough quality, but was just being bogged down by the tons of PS1 games. I got Final Fantasy X, and am really enjoying it. But I have never been disillusioned with the console, there are too many great games for that. If you dn't mind me saying, I think you may have set your expectations a little high

I think that eventually the ps2 will rule supreme like the ps1 eventually did before. This is mainly only down to wider range of games however they may not be better than the gamecube games but some of the really good ones on ps2 just can't be beaten.

I had the same, but with my ove for PS2 never wavering.

I bought the Xbox, played it, enjoyed it... got bored of Halo, bored of PGR, and Munch's is - I think - the best game on the Xbox.

But now, I haven't played on the Xbox for FIVE weeks. I recently bought the 'cube and have been playing Rogue Leader and Monkey Ball. I've also recently got back into GT3 on the PS2, and it's a testament to this games longevity that I'm enjoying it just as much as when I first bought it - if not more so, as I add more and more cars to my garage.

I'd have to disagree about the lacklustre release schedule though, at least as far as PS2 is concerned (an this is the Sony forum after all).

Next month we have V-Rally 3, POW and TOCA Race Driver, MoH Frontline.

July has Destruction Derby 4.

August has Hitman 2.

September has Malice, Onimusha 2, Run Like Hell and Stuntman.

October has The Thing.

November has Colin McRae 3, and very probably Tomb Raider AoD

Late 2002 should also see Starsky & Hutch, Riding Spirits (touted as GT3 with bikes), Terminator.

And still to be confirmed are 13, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Driver 3, The Great Escape, GT4 Online, and so much more.

These are just some of the reasons that PS2 still tops my pile as far as the ultimate gaming platform is concerned.

I'm not saying it's better than the other two, just that it offers *me* the best all-round gaming choice. I fully accept that other people have different views.

Mmmmmm....spam heaven....

It's all down to quality and the release schedules. If nothing's coming out, then yes you can hit a bit of a lull in something to keep you occupied. Though with the Platinum range ever expanding, you could always fill those holes with games you missed first time around, at a more appealing price.

It's still too early for me to decide which console I will prefer. They offer different games, and suit different needs. Ultimately I probably won't have a preference, as I bought them to be able to play more games. Not so I can make my own judgement as to which is the best console. Essentially I'm just in it to enjoy the games that are released, and that's all that matters to me.

Thats a very unfair statement, this forum has improved very much over the last few weeks alone, its not he spam heaven that it use to be, people who are here a lot now know that.

Anyway, to your post. I get what your saying, ff10 is one of those games that can pull many new owners to the console, it can sell units on its very own, its a game with that type of pulling power, and rightly so. Its an amazing game, we all know that (the people who like it). But i get the feeling from your topic that you think this is the only game worth having on the PS2 (whether this was your intention, im not sure, but thats how i read it) In any case, if thats so, then i cant complain with that, its your opinion. Mine differs.

Without trying to turn this into a console war topic, as i can see that it isnt one, i have to say that there are many games on the PS2 which i class a being truely great, and i have loved every minute that i have played on them. There are alot of games on the PS2. There are alot of bad games on the PS2, maybe more than there are good games, but there are still many good games out on the PS2, more than what most people can afford, including me. But like i say, thats down to opinion.

I can see where your coming from though, everyone can get bored with a console when the games arent coming out that you like, this happened to me for a month last year, but that was before the gaming boom on November and December where there were around 8 games that i wanted (and eventually got). Its just something that you live through, you either stick it out and wait, or like you did, buy a new console for the launch boom, but then again run the risk of being bored with it again.

"Games make or break a console. In the gaming industry, its quantity over quality which will bring in the casual masses"

Thats true. But that doesnt mean that the PS2 follows this theory, there are many good games for it, as there are bad.

To me, my PS2 is like a Cream Sponge cake. Its the cream of the crop. :D

Sometimes 1 games real in the owners, sometimes like me, you just like all that the console offers. Depends on you.
