... short and sweet, when I shut down Windows 98 (SE) I get the 'Windows is shutting down' screen, but then it doens't turn the machine of anymore, when it used to.... any ideas????

you havent by any chance installed the Fast Shutdown patch from WindowsUpdate have u?? i did, and i had the problem that when i told it to shutdown it restarted. apparently you were only meant to install that patch if u already had a problem, not to prevent one from occurring. M$ didn't think to tell us that tho!
i think there's a KnowledgeBase article on the M$ web site about how to remove it. my pc was due a reformat so i got rid of the little beggar that way. if not, try checking the bios for any settings that might have disabled it

Actually, I think I've misunderstood. ;~)
Try turning off Advanced Power Management and see if that fixes the problem: this is just a workaround, but if your PC shuts down then you've isolated the problem.

I'm not using Windows 98 anymore so this is sort of from memory:
Run msconfig and turn off fast shutdown. This sometimes sorts problems out.
Disable any sounds in the Control Panel that play on shutdown - they might be corrupted.
Disable your startup programs one-by-one with msconfig, and see if this gets rid of the hang.

Yeah, I get this, I thought it was something to do with the power settings in the BIOS because it happened to me when I had a new mobo fitted. *searches Google for an answer*
