I've used a helluva lot of ISPs in my time, and they've all sucked. However, I truly believe that Vispa are the perfect ISP. Why? Well, they provide the all-important "Three Ss", Speed, Stability and Support:
Speed - Vispa is probably the fastest ISP I've ever used. I get over 7kbps from France and Luke for long periods of time. Even the average is around 4.7kbps. As well as good throughput, my pings are very good too. Pings to Luke are around 150ms, and I get 120ms from view.intritus.net. Even at saturation, I get Windows-pings of around 4000ms (I say Windows-pings, because that's what undisciplined connections get. My Linux connection with traffic control gets around 800ms).
Stability - Not only do I get disconnected extremely rarely, apart from the 2-hourly cutoffs, I also seem to have a static IP. This means I can gest disconnected, and if I reconnect within 300 seconds, I keep all my TCP/IP connections alive. That means webistes just continue downloading, I stay connected to IRC servers and downloads continue regardless. In fact, this morning, I disconnected to make a quick phone call, then reconnected and it was as if the call had never happened. Vispa don't specify a static IP, but I've noticed I've had one.
Support - Good support is an excellent trait of an IP. Vispa's is second to none, the level of information they provide is astounding. Here is a typical information announcement:
20th May 2002 - 15:36
Dialup
4 Engineers (2 Vispa who have flown from Manchester and 2 Energis) are now on site in Telehouse, however they are awaiting a courier who is stuck in heavy traffic to arrive from Cisco. A recent call with one of our engineers says that they removed the old switch that's died, checked the network routes back to our offices which are fine. The ETA has now been moved to 17:00 to be on the safe side.
Fantastic.
Vispa really are the cat's nads of ISPs. At the standard £14.99 a month, they're unbeatable. I strongly recommend all of you switch, regardless who you're with now.
