Two words likely to elicit either hatred or devotion - Big Brother, a "gameshow" thats sole attraction is watching complete strangers do menial tasks, all the while hiding between our glass screen (well, a tv) safe in the knowledge that we cant be seen. Now if thats not slightly perverted I dont know what is? For the past two years the nation in general (I know that there are those who fiercely oppose it) have sat, enthralled by the likes of 'randy andy' and 'nasty nick', not to mention Helen and Paul off B.B.2. These are people that if you met in the street, you would not only ignore them, you would more than likely avoid them, but because theyre on TV they must be interesting, GIVE ME A BREAK! If the camera was turned and you were shown to the nation - would they care? Should they care? A regular person wouldnt apply, to devote 10 weeks of their life in a house with strangers, away from home comforts, just to have your 15 minutes of fame, there has to be something essentially lacking in their lives.

But still people watch, is there something lacking in their lives? Has everyone become so obsessed with gossip, and yet so scared of actually going out and living, that they are forced to watch 'reality' shows and gossip about the contestants as if they know them personally. Everyone has their 10 cents on the contestants, their theory as to what they think, and can describe in detail exactly what has happened in that persons life for the past few weeks, and yet if asked probably dont know the names of their neighbours.

But the problem doesnt stop there, not only do people like to watch other peoples lives, they like to try to intervene from a distance, to play god, to manipulate events in the way they want - be it by voting people out of the big brother house, or just by logging on to its website and choosing where to look, what to see - these people have no privacy - so why not exploit it to your benefit? These shows offer a sleasy way for people to have a sense of control, and a sense of being able to see something forbidden - to be able to intrude in on peoples privacy.

But its not just reality TV shows, the popularity of the sims on the pc just goes to show that a wide range of people are seemingly looking out for this sense of control, why go out and live a life when you can create a simulation of someone elses life that you can contol every detail of - why live a life when you can create a fantasy? The answer is simple - lack of control is not always a bad thing. Over the past 50 years, societies around the world (not just Britain + America either) have been told that if your not in control, then somehow your not as good as those in a position of power. Politicians have become back stabbing power hungry ego maniacs who look out for their interests rather than look out for the interests of those whose lives they influence, is this how society should be - even communist countries fell apart because top ranking officials wanted to be better off than everyone else, and when those preaching didnt practice, the system fell apart. But if everyone was looking out for the community (much like the middle age feudal system) would everyones lives be better?

So by nature are humans control freaks - is the attraction of videogames the sense of control it gives you individually - you are influencing what happens, no one else. Is the attraction of Big brother the sense of control? Or annominity - they dont know your watching, but you are.

Are we as a nation, generalay perverts and control freaks?

BB1 was good cause it hadn't been done before, BB2 was tolerable, but I never really watched the start. But a BB3? I ask you what the hell is the point? I've got friends who are no doubt watching it on E4 right now avidly, they stay up watching them sleep! Am I the only one who thinks that that is really sad? But I totally agree with you Genesisofthesith.

generally (the correct spelling)

I don't really class watching Big Brother as being 'pervy'

I class looking at porn on the internet all the time 'pervy'

We only watch Big Brother because it is so 'interestingly boring'...
