But still people watch, is there something lacking in their lives? Has everyone become so obsessed with gossip, and yet so scared of actually going out and living, that they are forced to watch 'reality' shows and gossip about the contestants as if they know them personally. Everyone has their 10 cents on the contestants, their theory as to what they think, and can describe in detail exactly what has happened in that persons life for the past few weeks, and yet if asked probably dont know the names of their neighbours.
But the problem doesnt stop there, not only do people like to watch other peoples lives, they like to try to intervene from a distance, to play god, to manipulate events in the way they want - be it by voting people out of the big brother house, or just by logging on to its website and choosing where to look, what to see - these people have no privacy - so why not exploit it to your benefit? These shows offer a sleasy way for people to have a sense of control, and a sense of being able to see something forbidden - to be able to intrude in on peoples privacy.
But its not just reality TV shows, the popularity of the sims on the pc just goes to show that a wide range of people are seemingly looking out for this sense of control, why go out and live a life when you can create a simulation of someone elses life that you can contol every detail of - why live a life when you can create a fantasy? The answer is simple - lack of control is not always a bad thing. Over the past 50 years, societies around the world (not just Britain + America either) have been told that if your not in control, then somehow your not as good as those in a position of power. Politicians have become back stabbing power hungry ego maniacs who look out for their interests rather than look out for the interests of those whose lives they influence, is this how society should be - even communist countries fell apart because top ranking officials wanted to be better off than everyone else, and when those preaching didnt practice, the system fell apart. But if everyone was looking out for the community (much like the middle age feudal system) would everyones lives be better?
So by nature are humans control freaks - is the attraction of videogames the sense of control it gives you individually - you are influencing what happens, no one else. Is the attraction of Big brother the sense of control? Or annominity - they dont know your watching, but you are.
Are we as a nation, generalay perverts and control freaks?
Oh, and well done with the GAD!
I don't really class watching Big Brother as being 'pervy'
I class looking at porn on the internet all the time 'pervy'
We only watch Big Brother because it is so 'interestingly boring'...
