Although you may not know it, your computer is probably home to hundreds of little files that are doing just just this to you.
Whenever you download a program, you are probably downloading hundreds of little files that will be stored on your computer and will be secretly spying on you, monitoring your every move.
These little files are used by companies to log all of your internet visits and all the information that you have entered into them, this is known as 'Spyware' or 'Adware.'
All the information that these little files have collected about you would be sent via YOUR internet connection to other companies on the internet that thrive on this. These programs are not only annoying because they take away all of your privacy but they also slow your computer down and can eat up bandwidth from your internet connection, making surfing very slow indeed.
Once the companies have got your information, all the details are in their hands, they know everything about you now. That email address that you were keeping seperate from the net to avoid SPAM is now on their mailing list and your credit card details that you used to buy that game last week are now held by them.
Scary isn't it!
By processing this information, the companies can now target you will hundreds of adverts and SPAM email messages. Your happy internet surfing will now be victim to many popups and emails all advertising different types of offers. But these adverts are personalised, I was looking a game sites for a week and continuously after that I was receiving popup adverts trying to sell me computer games. Nothing could be done to stop them!
How do I know I have got spyware?
Spyware is mostly contained in peer to peer sharing programs and many 'freeware' or 'shareware' programs that you have downloaded off of the internet. KaZaa is a main offender of this with large amounts of Spyware looking at everything you do on your computer.
Other things that can happen or have happened to me are:
Your computer runs slower than normal because of all of the programs running in the background.
Your internet runs slower than normal because of all the information being sent about you via your connection.
I had my whole internet history wiped, most probably sent to a company somewhere.
You receive popup adverts when you are connected to the internet.
I had constant dial-up connection boxes popping up when I wasn't connected, the spyware was trying to connect to send the information off!
What can I do?
Easy to deal with this problem, a program named 'Ad-Aware' has been designed to scan your whole computer and single out any offending programs, you can then delete them and have a private computer once again.
The website for this program is www.lavasoft.de, I recommend that you back-up files before you delete them (using the programs 'back-up' feature) because some programs that rely on adverts like GoZilla might stop working.
Hope that this helps to 'restore your privacy!'
Don't be stupid!
