Check all the above keys for anything which may try to connect to the internet - including things which may be looking for auto-updates (e.g. Virus Scanners, GetRight etc etc) and delete them, taking note of the settings you remove. If you have MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messneger, AIM, ICQ or similar, make sure they are not set to load on startup. Then restart to check
If it still tries to connect, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop, and click 'Properties'. On the 'Connections' tab, select the 'Never dial a connection' radio button. Restart to check if it has worked.
If it still tries to connect, then try rebooting your computer in Safe Mode. To do this, restart your computer with a blank 3.5" floppy disk in the drive. It will say "Non system disk or disk error". Remove the disk and double tap F8 on the keyboard. It will give you a Boot Menu. From here, choose Safe Mode. If it still connects, then try the address below:

basically i was gonna suggest that someone connects with ur PC using either Windows XP remote desktop, or winvnc.
u cud still do it, but coz ur on dial-up it'll be slow. basically it wud just give someone else access to ur pc (with u watching and u can kick them off at any time if they do something wrong) so that they can find the problem.
when it tries to connect at startup, does it load up M$ internet explorer as well??
I looked in msconfig and regedit like you said and they were clear of things that might affect it, i then used this ad-aware thing and found loads of files deleted them all and still no success. However i realised that most of the files were GATOR or GAIN, and when i tried to delete a few of them i was told they cudnt b deleted! So do you think these may be the source of the problem? If so how on earth do i get rid of 'em?
Basically it is spyware, you need to go and download a program to clean your computer of it. It's everywhere.
Give me 10 minutes and I will write a nice little topic to explain it all to you and give you a website to save yorselves!
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
If you find any web page addresses here, or any Adware programs then delete the entries (take a note of the details in case something goes wrong and you need to add them back again).
Then go to Start, Run, type in 'msconfig' and press enter. On the 'Startup' tab, look for ANY entries which might use an internet connection and uncheck them. Click OK, and press Yes when it prompts you to reboot. Hopefully it shouldn't try to connect. However, many of your programs won't have loaded. Therefore go back to 'msconfig' and check each one in turn until you find the entry which is using your internet connection. It is then up to you what to do with this entry - delete it, prevent it from connecting from the program's own options menu.
Alternatively, it may be possible to use a Firewall (e.g. ZoneAlarm) to find out which programs make a network request on startup. Only try this if the other methods failed - if you don't have a firewall installed, you will have to download and install one.
