It was Friday night, and, after a hard day down at Bar SR fixing the coming notable elections with the other notables, I decided to become more drunk. Staggering into the nearest bar I was suddenly accosted by two rather curious characters arguing over something. The first was a blue looking chap, with hideously spiked hair and no clothes on except some red shoes (or maybe that was just my imagination)? The next was an insanely biased Nintendo fan- a guy with a red hat, dungaree's, and a moustache. It could only be SonicRav and Dringo arguing over Sega and Nintendo again.

This time it was about which company caters for everyone. Which didn’t bother me much- I never get involved with their childish fights. Until, of course, they got me involved by asking me to judge their arguments.

Well, what could I do? Two raving fanatics, sharp spikes and super jumps included, telling me I HAD to judge their arguments. So, I told them to send me their arguments first thing this week for me to judge. And this is what they came up with-

**************************************

SonicRav began…

“So, Dringo has given me the challenge of writing three paragraphs to outline why I believe Sega appeals to every type of gamer. But what to talk about? Should I concentrate on Sega’s history, comprising of ten consoles and hundreds of games? Perhaps I should talk about Sega’s dominance in almost every conceivable genre- many of which they created, refined and perfected? Then again, I could always talk about the original titles that Sega produces. I’m at the end of the first paragraph and I’m still not sure where to start. How’s this: genres. To really appeal to every kind of gamer, Sega would have to make every type of game.

Obviously Sega has been a dominating force in racing games- they made the first ever 3D racing game (Daytona) and have gone on to make classics like the Sega Rally Series, F355, Manx TT, Sega GT, Sega Touring Car and Scud Racer. Not only does one of the creators of Ridge Racer now run a Sega department, but Amusement Vision has just been given the contract to code F Zero for Nintendo- almost solely because of their experience. As for fighting games, Sega, once again, created the whole 3D fighting genre with Virtua Fighter- still one of the best known series out there. Along the way, Sega have made classics like Fighting Vipers and Streets of Rage, both of which have had/are having recent make overs.

But what about the big Western turn on: Sports. Well, Sega Sports series is the first to challenge EA in America, with the NFL, NBA and NHL 2k and 2k1 series having made some massive advances (including online play). In Japan Sega continue to make well-known regional games like J-League Soccer, Pro Baseball and several baseball games. Worldwide Sega has had great success with the Virtua Tennis series, and mixed success with Virtua Athlete and Virtua Striker.

And now to the last of the big genres: FPS, RPG and action games. To be honest, Sega has yet to produce anything to the quality of Goldeneye or MGS2; however, there have been promising signs of the new Shinobi game being a groundbreaking title. Meanwhile Sega have pushed back boundaries with Shenmue, and introduced the first online RPG in PSO. Oh, and that’s not mentioning Skies of Arcadia or the new Panzer Dragoon game. You know, lots of the people who made FF9 came from Sega. As for action, with arcade games ranging from House of the Dead to Crazy Taxi, how much more action do you need?

And so to the fifth paragraph of this three-paragraph topic: what does Sega offer gamers who want something new? Well, originality is Sega’s forte. In the last few years Sega has invented Cell Shading with Jet Set Radio, introduced new forms of game interaction in Rez and produced some fun quirky games like Super Monkey Ball, Chu Chu Rocket and Space Channel 5. They single handedly invented a completely new graphical style in Cell Shading, created games that use fishing-rod controllers and plastic maracas, and lead the way in arcade game innovation (controlling 60% of the market).

Well, what more can I say? You name a genre, Sega have had a big influence in it- in many cases they’ve invented it.

TO BE THIS GOOD TAKES AGES
TO BE THIS GOOD TAKES SEGA”

“If there has to be one single group that offers something for everybody then it has to be Nintendo and their second parties. Nintendo have used their up most cunning to rule the roost in nearly every genre that comes along, horror games will never be the same when newly acquired horror company Silicon Knights release Eternal Darkness. A section now conquered by Nintendo to go along side their dominance of the Platform genre (which they created), Mario, Conker, Banjo and Donkey Kong rule the 3D platforming roost whist Kirby and Yoshi are keeping things going for the 2D fans. Adventurer’s have the awesome Zelda and Pokémon (it wasn’t that popular for nothing) to come home to as well as future releases such as Starfox Adventure’s and Kameo: Elements of power! If you are a First Person Shooter fan then you should know that nothing comes near RARE’s Perfect Dark series, the game spawned by the world renown Goldeneye! One thing Nintendo have managed to do is begin the creation of a game that surpasses even Halo, Metroid Prime from Retro Studio’s looks incredible and set to do what Halo and Goldeneye has done and redefine the FPS genre.

And then there is the beat ‘em up genre, and Nintendo’s front-runner in this department is Super Smash Brothers. Dismissed by many as basic kiddie crap, Super Smash Brothers is a brilliant game, instantly playable and like many Nintendo games, easy to play, hard to master. The game is addictive, offers incredible multiplayer fun and is probably the best beat ‘em up ever. But if it is the more “serious” beat ‘em ups you are after then there is the legendary Killer Instinct series. With rumors of a KI3 doing the rounds it looks like Namco, Tecmo and SEGA truly have a fight on their hands. EA and SEGA may think they rule the sporting department; well I can assure you they are wrong. Sadly Leftfield are no longer part of Nintendo but basketball games like NBA Courtside are still planned from Nintendo. Then there is Camelot famed for golfing and tennis games and developing Mario Tennis and Golf. Despite claims these are kiddie, multiplayer style games I can assure you this is not the case, Camelot used to make serious sporting titles and despite the graphic alteration that serious style still comes through. Puzzle wise games such as Dr. Mario, Pokémon Puzzle League, Tetris, Kirby Tilt ‘n Tumble etc… show that Nintendo can do a good mind bender any day.

Nintendo’s dominance of the racing genre is a litter underestimated. Lack of any serious “arcade racer” makes the company appear a failure but then that is blatantly not true. Excitebike is the best motorcycle game ever, from its first NES game to the recent N64 outing. Other extreme racing games include the duel games 1080 Snowboarding and Wave Race, both best in their genre, nothing compares to Wave Race’s realism and despite a steep learning curve great fun as well. 1080 when first released set standards for snowboarding games and with 1080: White Storm soon to be released, I’m putting money on them doing it again. Fun racers is something else Nintendo are perfectionist in, Mario Kart invented it and always sets standards which no one can meet and Rare’s Diddy Kong Racing comes second. As good as Wipeout is, it is a simple clone of the original F Zero series from Nintendo that is in my mind the best futuristic racer ever! Then there is Donkey Kong Racing, a game that will be like nothing like what we have experienced before. Strategy games are something else Nintendo excel in, the awesome Advance Wars, the million seller Pikmin and the Japanese game developed by an English man called Doshin the Giant. Combined with original games such as Animal Crossing, Luigi’s Mansion and Blast Corps, Nintendo and co. really are the best singular company when it comes to something for everyone. Nintendo are always changing, improving and inventing so that the future of gaming really is something to look forward to, and here’s to it.

Dringo.”

So, there the debate stands. Threatened with death, I’ve decided to leave it to you good people of the forums to decide which company really does make games for everyone. Oh, and feel free to add bits in yourselves!

After all, that way I avoid being squashed or decapitated!

Nintendo can code F Zero as they;ve done it before. SEGA are doing it because of the arcade version, but of course you knew that.

NINTENDO!!!

For years they have strived to bringing ALL gamers top quality games of the highest standard!

The best platformers, the greatest action/RPG EVER, top quality sports titles, superb raceing games, absolutely fantastic racing games..... the list goes on!

About the only thing Sega has done recently which has been good has to be the fantastic Shenmue and Jet Set Radio. Other than that though, they ain't really done much to shout about! But Nintendo? They keep producing ground breaking games all the time. Inventing new genres, and just blowing away the gaming massive with ever new release!

Nintendo are FAAAAR better than Sega!

Just look at which is still producing consoles, and which had to lower itself to producing games for it's arch nemesis!!!

LOL!

Not saying Sega are bad at all. I own a Mega Drive, Saturn, and Dreamcast. But Nintendo's consoles have ALWAYS been better and always will be! Nintendo make the greatest games! Sega occasionally make the odd MASTERPIECE like Shenmue, but even less often than Nintendo create there's!

:p

Okay...

Nintendo gives me sports in the form of 1080, Mario Tennis, and Mario Golf.

Nintendo gives me FPS in the form of Metroid and Perfect Dark.

Nintendo gives me platforming in the form of Luigi, Mario, Conker, banjo, and Donkey Kong...Nothing comes close to Conker and Mario.

Then there is smash brothers as a beat em up and Killer instinct....

Anyway, Sega win in the racing genre for me, but Nintendo is the strongest overall.

I vote Nintendo :P
