If you stick with something and continue to work very hard on it you'll soon end up with something that's pleasing to an audience aswell as yourself. Nintendo and Sega have been dedictaing themselves to the likes of Sonic, Mario and Zelda for around 15 years or so now, and look where they are today. Sqaure have kept their heads down and focused hard 'till the end with the large number of highly-succesfull Final Fantasy games, and Rare and co. have done the same with the innovative and original ideas that have made them the 'Hot Propperties' they are today.

If Sony keep at it with their games, and if Microsoft can repeat the success of their PC's over the years, then in the not-too-distant future we'll surely be playing some of the greatest games of all time.
Yes, maybe even a few Ocarina of Time, and Final Fantasy X beaters!

The success of so many games and consoles, leading to the success of many now 'big-name' companies is all down to a lot of dedication and hard graft put into their work. Analyse a new console or game closely and you'll probably even find drops of blood and beads of sweat staining some areas!

We owe a lot to these people, even if they are based in a country with a culture or religion we dis-like. They still deserve many more thanks and much more appreciation than they get.
After all, they didn't HAVE to work so hard, did they! They could've quite easily done what many other people do and just 'slack off' or put less than 110% in on the effort scale.
Thankfully though, they didn't. And we have already been blessed with some of gaming's all-time greats, and the same should go for the rest of gaming's life.

Although what comes to us as 'new' now may be top-quality stuff, i'm beginging to feel unsure as to wether or not we are seeing that same dedication of years ago 'in every single area'.

You may be thinking "Yeah, of course we are. Just look at some of the next-gen. titles around like Halo!" Ok. Halo may be a great game but there are still areas that are lacking - hence why it fails to get a 100% rating in every area.
Now I haven't played this game, but i've heard that it is lacking in one area, mainly to do with the AI of those on your side aswell as the opposition. CPU AI is something that is often commented on in many of the recently over-hyped games, but no-one really seems to be doing anything about it.

What does this say to us? That games developers are too busy making new games like the old ones instead of creating many different and original titles, after solving problems with the older one??
Yes, they have solved problems in the past. Graphics have come a very long way from the 8-bit days, but then again, that probably wasn't too hard to achieve with the console developers making the machines, while the games people just work to somewhere near the limits of what each console can produce, rather than trying to break those limits or find their own solutins to these problems.

How can you expect a game to be dubbed "The Best Ever" and get 100% Ratings everywhere if not all limits are pushed to the max and beyond, while the team themselves are not trying to overcome any problems they encounter by themselves.

In fact, all they seem to do when they encounter a problem is just simply work around it, and leave it living and breathing in the game.
Look at some of the N64 games like Zelda and Mario. At certain angles you could see through walls into hidden rooms so you'd know where all the secrets are, leaving just a matter of time before you got there.
See, even Nintendo, one of the greatest companies of all-time aren't exactly perfect! The problem with something like this is that it's like a cheat really. Without this, you'd have to stick with the adventure and concentrate and think very hard about what to do and where to go next.

There are also those little bugs and mistakes that mean you xcan accidentaly access areas way too early in the game, spoiling any surprises and excitement you could be experiencing later in the game.
I recall something in Majora's Mask for this, envloving the Thief's Hideout. Normally, you'd have to wait untill the end of Day 3 and have to have completed a number of tasks to gain the propper access. But by simply finding the crack in the wall on any other day, the just had to simply roll repeatidly while wearing the Bunny Hood and you were in!

Even with small problems and mistakes like these it shows that the big names aren't quite putting in all the effort they are rewarded for. Sure, the games turn out great in many cases, but it could all be slightly less exciting and maybe more dissapointing for those hard-working and adventurous gamers who like to explore every aspect of the game.

But by all means, Hidden Secrets like the picture of Mario and co. in the window at Hyrule Castle's Courtyard in Ocarina of Time add to the fun and surprise. They should stay, others should be carefully removed!

I think we can all tell when we play a game if the developers have poured their heart and soul into the project. This is all we can ask of them.
No game is perfect, but what makes certain games stand out above lesser games is whether we sense that the programmers truly care about the game they have been working on.

Most if not all of Miyamoto's games have this feel about them. You can just tell that the main man behind the game and the people he is overseeing and directing are dedicated to producing a truly worthwhile product.
When I hand over my hard-earned cash for a game, all I want in return is the knowledge that the programmers have done everything they could to make the game as good as they could.
