With the recent announcements of new video game adaptations of the classic old television shows He-Man and Knightrider, what other old shows might become videogames??
Many people nowadays complain about a lack of originality in many games, with loads of poor new games characters appearing, but now it seems that some developers are learning that old tv shows are great source material for games.
The Dukes of Hazzard was a pretty poor game that sadly didn’t do the old show justice; it just seemed a bit of a cash-in, and a Starsky & Hutch game is also still on the cards.
Some tv related games were around in the 80’s, with He-Man and Transformers games on the Spectrum being fairly good side-scrolling platform adventures, and Minder was a great trading sim, where you could buy and sell stock, visit Terry’s flat and The Winchester, plus lots of characters and the great theme tune, plus I think there were Eastenders and Neighbours games. In those days however, the level of technology didn’t allow people to realise the potential for games, but nowadays things are different, with accurate graphics, sound etc allowing developers to accurately recreate old programmes.

So what 70’s/80’s programmes would I like to see made into videogames?
Whenever you raise the issue of 80’s cartoons or action shows, a huge list always appears when us retro tv loving nerds recall the good old days when packets of bubblegum cost 8p and Michael Jackson was the coolest guy on earth.
Thundercats, A-Team, Miami Vice, Magnum P.I, G.I.Joe, Transformers, He-Man, ALF, The Persuaders, Diff’rent Strokes, MASK, Knightrider, Terry & June (!!), Magyver (sp?), CHIPS, TJ Hooker, The Fall Guy, The Incredible Hulk, Crazy Like a Fox, Street Hawk, The Professionals, and another hundred or so more.
But would any of these shows actually make good games?

There could be a good puzzle or point & click adventure using the Magyver franchise, where you control a virtual Richard Dean Anderson in a non-violent quest and use ingenious ways of disposing of baddies using only dental floss, an orange, a pencil and an Austin Allegro.

The A-Team is the Holy Grail for many old skool tv lovers, but if a game came out, would it do the great show justice?
Maybe it could be a game like Project Eden, where you switch control between the four characters, each having their own skills. The plot would have to be about baddie rednecks that wanted to steal poor people’s land, and it’s left to the A-Team to sort out the problem.
The game would obviously include car chase sections with a car/jeep flipping over and escaping the M.Ps, beat ‘em up sections where Mr.T throws some big henchman over a car bonnet or bar table, the team construct a clever device to defeat the baddies, plenty of gunfire with nobody getting shot plus all the famous quotes such as Hannibal saying “I love it when a plan comes together” and Mr.T calling Murdock a “crazy sucka”.
The A-Team are a rag-tag bunch & each character would have their strengths; Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith is the cigar chomping leader & a master of disguise who was always “on the jazz”, Lieutenant Templeton "Faceman" Peck is the charming con-man & scammer, Captain H.M "Howling Mad" Murdock is the team's rather insane pilot, and Sergeant Bosco "B.A." Baracas, who provides driving and engineering skills, but he can’t go flying unless you find some sleeping drugs to spike his milk.
Some characters would be able to do things that others couldn’t, so you must switch between them to complete the mission. But when there’s a big fight scene, you control one of the characters, with the others controlled by the computer.

Miami Vice/ Magnum P.I/ The Persuaders could be a GTA3 or Headhunter style games, where you must drive around in your cool Lamborghini/ Ferrari/ Aston Martin whilst apprehending criminals and getting into all sorts of capers.
Miami Vice would be set in the mean streets of Miami, with missions involving drug/gun smuggling, murder and various other unsavoury things, whilst Magnum would be a bright and fun adventure set in Hawaii. Needless to say, Tom Sellecks moustache would be accurately rendered.
The Persuaders would be set all around the glamorous European locations, with virtual Roger Moore & Tony Curtis driving about in their cool cars, getting into fights and solving mysteries. Rogers’s famous quizzical eyebrow would be constructed from about 10,000 polygons, with accurate arching movement.
Chips and Street Hawk would be similar, but you ride on motorbikes.

A hotel sim based on Fawlty Towers?? With Basil being crazy/ rude to guests, Manuel being an inept waiter, Sybil constantly chatting on the phone and loads of mad cap action you must put up with as you try to create the finest hotel in Torquay.
All the famous guests would be there including the Germans, hotel inspectors, Mrs. Richards, the psychiatrists, etc and the Major would be ever present.
You would have to deal with many crazy situations whilst trying to run the hotel as smooth as possible.

There is a really big market for these sorts of games, as long as they’re made into GOOD games rather than cash-ins, and with many of these shows being re-released on VHS and dvd, with many newcomers enjoying them as well as the old fans, so I wonder if more and more will be seen in the future?
Controlling Mr.T in the Rocky game and an A-Team game would be very cool.

Phew! The mind boggles when I think of all the old TV shows and if they were made into games.
For some reason my first thought was "Rising Damp" - a silly thought I know - but controlling Rigsby in a madcap humourous game set in his dingy B&B made me chuckle. Throughout the game he could be endlessly trying to pull Miss Jones.... like I said, silly idea.
