May 21, 2002 - Grand Theft Auto 3 and all future titles in the GTA franchise will be exclusive to PlayStation 2 until October 2004, SCEA announced today at its E3 press conference. The hugely popular "thug simulator," developed by DMA Design for Rockstar Games, was the best-selling game title across all platforms last year, and earned IGN's PS2 Game of the Year award amid dozens of other accolades. This announcement means it's curtains for the planned Xbox version of GTA3, which was to be released later this year.
"Given the worldwide acceptance of PlayStation 2, it's natural for Take-Two to partner with Sony Computer Entertainment America and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in its respective markets," said Kelly Sumner, CEO of Take-Two Interactive (Rockstar's parent company). "We want our best-selling franchise to reach the greatest number of consumers. The penetration of PlayStation 2 globally, combined with the pervasive nature and power of the PlayStation brand, will help us achieve this objective.
The fact that the PlayStation 2 will be the only home entertainment system on which one can enjoy Grand Theft Auto titles is a great statement for the platform overall."
Did you know Super Smash brothers Melee has sold nearly the same amount of copies world wide as Xbox units sold worldwide...
Europeon Launch still to come as well...
> Nintendo will always have thier own exclusive games which will never

True... but are they crowd-pullers on the same scale?

Not interested.

Not interested.

A very good game, but also not unlike Starfighter.

Highly addictive fun! But also by Sega, so it won't necessarily remain exclusive. I did hear once that it was coming to PS2, but all such talk seems to have disappeared.
> Starfox adventures looks to be one of the best games of the year
Hmm... will wait and see with that one.

One to watch.
Basically all the machines have their exclusives. Some are worth it, others are not - and I apply that to all formats.
The king of platforming will be back in the form of Super Mario Sunshine.

Starfox adventures looks to be one of the best games of the year
Eternal Darkness...another game to offer somthin to the mans who keep calling the Cube a kiddy console.
So we have in effect a level playing field, which PS2 still dominates from an almost untouchable vantage point.
GTA, GT3, Dropship, The Getaway, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Ratchet & Clank, Devil May Cry, Stuntman, Driver, and a whole string of others I posted a while back and can't recall.
It's not all about exclusives (though we have more than enough), it's about games worth playing. And even owning all three machines, I still find PS2 tops the pile in that respect.
And those that aren't exclusive, PS2 tends to get first.
Anyway I think its about time PS2 got some more exclusive games, this wave of conversions I don't think has helped out the console much. Sony should try and do what nintendo do and get some more origanal franchises that can't be found on any other system.
So then, how many exclusives does the PS2 actually have now?
Only GTA and GT3 seem to spring to mind as the big ones...
Timesplitters 2, Final Fantasy, Winning Eleven, Metal Gear...all gonna be on other consoles in one form or another...
GTA is probably the biggest crowd puller though yes...
> Though funny how the PC isn't mentioned...
True, but "exclusive" never really applies to the PC. Most exclusives are with regard to console platforms only.
Don't mind it going to the PC though, sinse thats the format GTA was born on, so it only seems fair that it gets the third game. Plus the PC isn't a console so it isn't really direct competition for the PS2.
Ah well, another killer app game for our console, that'll show all those x-box owners who always say 'all the PS2 games are crap and are converted better looking to our console anyway'.
