"The Future of Gaming", that is the name of this forum. But what does the future of gaming REALLY hold for us?

We are all constantly excited about certain games which are due to be released in the near future. I, for example, am currently looking forward this summer to games such as Final Fantasy X and Toca Racing Driver. Going even further into the future and I am also excited at the prospect of upcoming games like Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4 and Grand Theft Auto 3: Vice City, both of which are practically guaranteed to be fantastic titles.

But what about the more distant future? What will the gaming industry have to offer us in 5 years time for instance?

Obviously games will continue to get better and better. One particularly notable improvement will undoubtidly be the continuing progression of in-game graphics. Improvements in hardware and software development surely means that 'tv-quality' graphics are only just around the corner. Will football games for instance look identical to football matches we see on tv? Even better, will GTA-type games of the future look so realistic that we think we are watching police chases or big-city-riots on Sky News or CNN?!

New dimensions of gameplay will also be made available to us. The perfection of control pads and games' control methods will allow us to feel more than ever as if we truly are 'within' the game.

Perhaps there will also be increased development in control peripherals. Steering wheels have been with us for years and nowadays we also have items like virtual skateboards, dance mats and even fishing rod controllers! However, in the future, this area may see the introduction of games controllers using infared sensors. Such an example could be a small 'mat' with sensors placed all around it. These sensors could detect the body's motions, making games such as beat'em ups and football sims truly interactive. Imagine taking a free-kick in a football game and striking the 'ball' at such an angle and following through Beckham-style to get that all important curve....

As technology continues to progress forward in leaps and bounds, new consoles in the future are obviously a certainty. Even now we are hearing more and more rumours about a proposed Playstation 3, which could be with us within the next few years.

In my opinion, a major contributor towards the future of gaming will be the development of online gaming. Games such as Final Fantasy XI appear to be pioneering development in this area. As i have already mentioned, minor gameplay and graphical tweaks are to be expected, but online gaming with other gamers around the world could offer us a truly revolutionary experience. Games are often criticised or acclaimed for the artificial intelligence (AI) of its players or enemies. What AI could possibly be better than another human being? Imagine playing games like Grand Theft auto 3 online. The city would be a real crime-fest with various players/criminals competing for supremacy. Players going online could also have the oppurtunity to play as gang members, gang bosses or even police officers or FBI agents! The 'vigilante mode' is great fun on GTA3, but imagine how much more fun it would be if the criminal you executed was another online gamer? Pretty cool eh...?

In conclusion, I believe that the gaming industry at the moment is quite phenomenal. I still am regularly amazed at the graphics in some of the new titles i buy. But more importantly, the very, very good news is that things can only get better. So what DOES the future of gaming hold for us all?: Better gameplay, better graphics, better hardware, online gaming.... need i go on!
