Prisoner of War is set in War-torn Germany of 1941 onwards. You are an american officer who was sent to investigate the rumours of the Nazis developing a secret weapon of destruction. Unfortunately for you, your plane is shot and you are captured before being sent into a PoW camp where you are being kept with your fellow american and british buddies. Obviously being a man of action, you do not sit around waiting for the end of the war, but try and break out of the darn place. And here is where the players come in...
We are all used to guns and other technical advances in video games. If we see something we need to dispose off-we shoot it. If we see a whole loadof guards standing just around the corner-we press a button and kill the whole lot in some ingenious way. We all played Metal Gear Solid games - after all they re-defined gaming. The storyline was great, the idea was fantastic and the player could choose if he wanted to go in all guns blazing or sneak in through a back door. Stealth was a major part of the gameplay but really the player could make a choice whenever they wanted to - if they wanted to shoot everyone without thinking of the consequences you could do just that.
So it does come as a surprise that in PoW you have no guns, no high-tec gadgets and no handy health packs that replenish your health whenever you are stuggling. This game is all about your wits. It is your duty to break out of the concentration camp and head home (there is a storyline thrown in, so you do have to gather some info on the project you were sent to investigate in the first place). You have to use anything that you find in the camp to help you on your way and there are many ways in acquiring items you need. For example various fellow prisoners provide you with extra info and give you useful things if you do them a certain favour or two.
The camps where you are situated are state-of-the-art. They are extremely heavily guarded and you really have to think rationally if you are to escape unhurt. But you dont just do everything in your own time-oh no! There is a scheduled routine which every single prisoner must follow. You have to turn up for Roll Calls which is the Nazis method of checking if anyone is missing (and you better turn up, because there will be a camp-wide search otherwise). The whole day is divided into such periods where you are supposed to do certain activities. Whether you do them is another matter....
Obviously you can hardly progress anywhere if you just stand there obeying all the orders. Of course at first you will need to talk to everyone and gather some information on the camp, its security and parameters. But you have to go exploring as well in order to plan your escape. But you have to fool the guards into thinking you are actually there...How? Its up to you...
This is a very realistic representation of life in the camps. The enemy AI is superb, so as soon as you are spotted acting suspiciously, you will be qustioned and threatened. Every time you are discovered wheer you shouldnt be, all your items will be confiscated. You can regain them but it will take up a lot of time. ANother realistic thing is that you do not have the "Lara Croft Super-Dooper Backpack" where you can fit everything you can think off. You cant for example put a crowbar into your pocket and you will be arrested should you be found carrying it. You have to think a lot in this game.
This game may not appeal to everyone. It is a relatively slow game , because you have to consider the planning and exploring your environments. You do not rush into anything or you are gonna end up in a cooler every day. But should you require a game that lets you use your brain rather than futuristic bazookas this is it. Great graphics, fantastic enemy AI and an interesting new concept-this is going ot be one hell of a game. Lets just hope the famous Great Escape theme makes it into the final version.....Da da, da da da da da, da da da da da da da!!!....
