Role Playing Games. You play the role of a character set to become a local hero in a mysterious world, which usually envloves defeating evil in numorous fearsome battles, and eventually rescuing the Princess and saving the land around you as you know it. Very rarely do you find that you are a typical human being saving the day in the real world. The Shenmue series is the only one of which I can think relates to this. All others are set in fantasy lands with imaginary characters and magic to aid you. And this list includes Zelda, Final Fantasy and even the new Starfox game.
How long have RPG's been around for?? I honestly do not know.
But it seems like they really came into the lime-light around the time of the 'Golden Age of Gaming', with the Legend of Zelda being one of the earliest and most notable RPG's that comes to mind. It all started at a time that seems so long ago now, with technology that seems incredibley prehistoric when compared to the power of today's generation. But despite all this, RPG-Adventure games are going stronger than ever today, even more so than back in the Golden Age when they emerged as a new and innovative genre of game.
If you ask a load of random gamers which genre of games they prefer most, i'd expect a large majority (maybe 8/10) to answer with 'Role Playing Games', and then maybe name one of their favourite - probably Zelda or Final Fantasy.
Every big RPG fan usualluy finds that they cannot get ALL of the RPG titles they want on just one format - unless of course they are some kind of scientific genious who can modify consoles to play games designed for ANY format! But that's impossible!
You cannot expect any big RPG fan to be satisfied with one console from the current generation to meet his gaming needs. Sure, on one machine you'll get a good set of racers and beat 'em ups, aswell as a decent platformer or two, but the number of top RPG's on one console is limited.
Read the above paragraph and forget it! That is simply no longer true!
Thanks to Nintendo's on-growing large reputation and the unique gaming machine that is the Nintendo GameCube, one day in the not too distant future, RPG fans will be happy with this console alone!
"Why??" I hear you ask. Well, just look around at Nintendo's forthcoming RPG titles in both this year and the next. And who knows what the future may hold in store for the Role Playing gamers!
Legend of Zelda - It started with Nintedo and will die with Nintendo. Just like Mario, this long-running series has come straight from the mind of the master Miyamoto, while every one of Link's advemture has proved to be a huge success amongst RPG fans and Nintendo gamers alike - especially after 'Ocarina of Time' on the N64, dubbed the greatest game EVER!!
It look set to remain the same on the Cube too, with more new and original ideas from Shigsy to keep this game going strong!
Final Fantasy - The endless series that was born on an 8-bit Nintendo machine finally returns to one that's 120-bits more powerfull after Square and Nintendo finally put aside their differences and 'burried the hatchet'.
The success of this series of the Sony PlayStation (namely no.'s 7, 8 and 9) is un-missable. How can any Nintendo gamers say no to the chance to play in some of the greatest Adventure games to emerge in the Gaming World!
We may not be getting any of the previously mentioned titles, but why would we want them when whole NEW adventures with GBA linkabillity will be on the way!!
Any fan of Zelda is a fan if this - and vise-versa.
Starfox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet - Before this game, the Starfox series has consisted ONLY of 2 in-space shoot 'em ups. Although these games alone have attracted the punters, Rare have taken control of the rigths from Ninty to turn one of Shigsy's most unique ideas into yet another superb space-shooter with an extra RPG dimension to increase the size of this game.
If you called Lylat Wars short but enjoyed it, you'll be in for a real treat this time! And so will RPG fans, as Starfox is set to make it's smashing debut in an RPG-style Adventure. Watch out Link!!
Skies of Arcadia - An un-missable game on the deceased Dreamcast that'll live on forever in the hearts of all Sega and RPG fans alike - just ask Grix Thraves! To play this 'on high-demand' game you'll currently have to splash out 70-odd quid to get yourself Sega's final games console. But rest assured, as you can save the cash for the future! Just wait a while and the game that helped the DC's fame will arrive on the GameCube and PlayStaton 2.
You may have to wait a while but it'll be worth the wait!
Nintendo will be thanked as we don't HAVE to buy a Sega console enjoy the quality within this top-title!
Golden Sun??? - If you haven't heard of this game then you obviously haven't seen the GameBoy Advance. This game may be little and unkown, but once you explore and get into the game, you'll soon realise what all the talk is really all about.
There's no news yet as to wether it WILL be developed for any other format, but with a big say in the game, i'm sure Nintendo would get first say if anything was to happen!
So there you have it, 4 - possibly 5 - reasons as to why the Nintendo GameCube will be the console for every RPG fanatic during the next 2 years at least. After that time, i'm sure they'll be some more reasons to buy the cheap and tiny console, and there's always the good old replay value that'll keep you gaming for months whie you wait. Things haven't really change that much have they??

I've broken down & picked up FF Anthology today, along with a second-hand PS1 (for less than the cost of the game). They've changed the dialogues so much and therefore the characters, but everything else is just about identical.
Now, can someone confirm or deny the rumours that with the (supposedly-) forthcoming FF11, they're going back to their fantasy roots?!?

i don't see how you can like skies of arcadia and not final fantasy...
skies of arcadia has basically copied final fantasy exactly gameplay wise...
and story wise i think that final fantasy games whip soa...much darker and more twists..
soa is good mind you...ship battles are quite cool but they're far too easy!

I have always wanted to play Final Fantasy games, but never got round to it. As far as Skies of Arcadia goes, heard about it, it looks good, not really sure about it though.

I haven't played Skies of Arcadia yet, but it's definitley one game I wanna play! The problem now is as to wether I get it pretty soon on the Dreamcast, or wait a while and get it on the GameCube.
But I don't have either console yet, and don't know a great deal about either version, so I cannot decide yet.
The PlayStation 2 is THE console for Final Fantsay games (as it's backwards-compatible with PSX games) and I still believe that the Cube will be no.1 in terms of the best overall RPG's to date!
Even if we're not gunna get 7, 8, 9, 10, or 11 like rumours may have suggested, at least we'll be getting our own 'GameCube-exclusive' (doesn't that sound nice!) Final Fantasy titles!
And with all the top RPG's on one console, many people could turn to the GameCube over the others (including the PS2) for the best RPG action!

One criticsm of Skies of Arcadia (dreamcast version) is that there were FAR TOO MANY RANDOM BATTLES...if you thought FF games were bad wait until this one!!
try getting all the discoveries and you see how frustrating it is...count 3-5 seconds and gues what....there's ANOTHER random battle :D

Final Fantasy 4 and 5 have also just very recently been released on the ps1 (called Final Fantasy Anthology -20 quid for the 2 games!!)

Not a bad summary of RPGs. However not only are not all RPGs not available on all consoles, but not all RPGs are released outside of Japan...
Take the Final Fantasy series:
Final Fantasy 2, 3, and 5 weren't released outside of Japan. FF 4 was released as FF 2 in the US, and FF 6 as FF 3 (though it was recently rereleased as FF 6 on the PS1). So as far as the American market went, they saw a jump straight from FF 3 to FF 7. Now I'm wondering... should I go out and buy one of these ultra-cheap PS1's to play FF6, or just dig out my SNES?
We've also got Sega's back-catalogue to look forward to; this includes the Phantasy Star and Shining Force series, though these are most likely to appear on GBA. However, with the 8cm DVD format for the GC, you have to wonder if games such as Popful Mail from the ill-fated Sega CD will be ported.
