Liverpool announced today that they will not be pursuing the transfer of Anelka to Liverpool. As a Liverpool fan myself, I think that we've let a genuine world-class player slip through our fingers. Ok, we may be getting Kanoute, but he couldn't hold a candle to Anelka's threat in the penalty-area, and Anelka had built up a good rapport with the fans.
Anelka, we salute you, and wish you well for wherever your high profile career takes you next.
...so, who else could fill Anelkas boots for Liverpool? ..with Owen and Heskey being the main two, we have bit-part strikers like Baros (who Houllier said will get a bigger chance next season), Litmanen, and Smicer sometimes goes up there. I personally, would love us to sign David Trezugeut (don't know how to spell that), although, that's just a pipe dream of mine :D

I think Nicolas Anelka is too good a player to just let him walk away to nothing.Freddie Kanoute is a great player in an average side.But i also believe that Gerard Houllier and his knowledge of world football will bring a top quality striker to our club next year.Cisse of France has also been strongly linked with Liverpool and remember this is the guy that has kept Anelka out of the french world cup squad so there must be something to him!We are on the verge of being world beaters again so we need to have the players capable of carrying the torch ,in time,if he got his head right Anelka could of filled that mantle and i think if he had been going to the world cup the outcome may have been different,but another setback in his career is not what he needed now.

The main reason he won't be signed is probably due to the problems he could cause Gerard Houllier in the near future.
What I mean is his performance of the pitch, like his constant moaning and complaining at Arsenal, then Real Madrid where he almost retired at 21, and then more recently in his 2nd spell with PSG.
If it wasn't for that then Liverpool would've grabbed him like that!
You can't just judge a player on his performances on the pitch, you have to know that the real person will be ok away from football.
But Anelka is a World Class player, hence the big money moves and high-quality performances and goals over the years.

There is no doubt that Anelka has the talent but I can't say how relieved I am that Anelka hasn't signed. There will always be a question about his temperament (sp? dman mental block!) and his agent brothers are a constant concern. It was a hornets nest that I'm glad Liverpool didn't play with.
i think that is a big loss to liverpool as he has scored some great goals
