Once upon a time, there was a little game called 'The Terminator'. You may have heard of it - I gather the guy who made it went on to make a film about some ship sinking, and the movie's main star ended up going into politics. It also spawned a couple of sequels, and a hell of a lot of games. And you know what? Nearly every single one of them has been complete rubbish.

No, really. You'd think with a licence as big as 'The Terminator', there'd be at least a few good licenced games out there, but no. The fact is that there has only ever been one really good Terminator game, and it's a crying shame that there's never been a remake. It was a 3D shoot-em-up that hit the PC about fifteen years ago, so the graphics are pretty damn poor by today's standards, but it was addictive as hell.

The game's hook was its open level design - you had the freedom to wander around a whole city, and even hijack cars and drive around them, something that predated the Grand Theft Auto by a good few years. But you couldn't relax, because you knew your foe was out there somewhere. Which foe? Either The Terminator, or Kyle Reese, depending upon which character you chose to play as. Yes, that's right - you could actually play as The Terminator. In fact, the game was considerably easier if you did, since you didn't have to worry about protecting anyone. Conversely, as Kyle Reese, you had to keep Sarah Connor alive as well as yourself, so the game was a bit harder.

You started the game with a fairly basic weapon, though you could also go into shops and buy new ones, or just steal stuff if you felt so inclined, though that'd bring the police down on you pretty sharpish. And even if you were playing as the Terminator, enough bullets could bring you down, so you'd have to take out the cops pretty quickly if you wanted to get out of there with your booty. You could even get household items from other shops and mix them to make high explosives and the ilk.

But what really made The Terminator a great game, apart from the freedom the game gave you, was the fact that you knew your enemy was out there, doing his level best to dispose of you. This was especially scary if you were Kyle Reese, since the Terminator was capable of kicking your a**e quite soundly. Plus, you started the game without Sarah Connor, so if he reached her before you did, it was game over.

As I said earlier, this game is crying out for a remake, and it's certainly a hell of a lot better than the rubbish Terminator games we've seen of late. After all, who wouldn't want to play as/defend the human race from a homicidal robotic psychopath?
