My main and probably only criticism of the film was the needless romance scenes. I know that Anakin and Padme's relationship is a crucial part of the Star Wars series, as it inevitably results in the birth of Luke and Leia. However, was there any need for corny chat up lines and rolling around in the grassy meadows?! Perhaps George Lucas is getting soft in his old age?
These romance scenes appeared to keep taking valuable 'film-time' away from the brilliant scenes including the fighting, the jedi's, Jango Fett, Count Dooku, etc. For much of the film it would flick every 10 minutes between normal Star Wars and Star Wars romance! I found this extremely irritating. The romance in the other Star Wars films (4,5,6) between Luke and Leia, then Han & Leia were also crucial parts of the story, yet this romance was filtered into the storyline and didn't cause any disruption in the film.
Also, another (albeit small) criticism i have of the movie was that it was so blatantly obvious that Anakin is getting more evil all the time. Surely Yoda must sense this and should have locked him up or something?
Anyway, now i've got that out of my system I can talk about everything else that made Star Wars II an excellent film. The special effects were magnificent and the opening chase scene was breathtaking. The fighting scenes were like nothing ever scene in a Star Wars movie before, with mass-battles between droids and jedi-knights!
If thats not enough for you and you haven't seen the film yet then this will convince you: Yoda's fight scene against Count Dooku for me was the greatest film moment in history. Before seeing the film i had heard about this scene and knew it was going to be good, yet still i wasn't prepared for the awesomeness of Master Yoda and his lightsabre....
She is indeed!
I just got back from seeing the film! WOW - Its absolutely amazing! I knew it would be good but I was totaly blown away! My best bit, has to be Yoda at the end - Stunning
Already planning to go back next week!
The best bit was seeing Anakin Skywalker descending towards the Dark Side -
It was a pretty good film altogether, and one that I feel was worthy of the francise. Theres loads more I could talk about but I cannae be bothered.
Oh, and one more thing. Natalie Portman is stunning!
Anyway, the romance scenes between Anakin and Padme were sickening! Unbearable in fact. But the romance scenes between Han and Leia were possibly the best bits about the original trilogy. Humour! Humour, I tell you! That's the key.
Han and Leia were funny.
"I love you."
"I know"
"But you didn't see us in the South Passage. She expressed her true feeling for me."
What have you got in Episode 2?
"Just being around you makes my skin tingle. I have thought about you every day since we parted. Now that we are back together, I am in agony that I cannot be with you fully. Your love is like........." Yeah, that's enough!
POETRY!!! That's what we've got. Poetry!
And was Anakin not about 6 in Episode 1? He was 6 yet he thoguht about Padme every day. He's 6! Now I could just have been a bit slow but doesn't 6 seem a little young to be torn over a girl?
Plus, why is he the only one who has aged? Natalie Portman hasn't. Ewan McGregor hasn't. Anakin's mum hasn't. Sammy hasn't. They're all the same age yet Anakin has grown by 10 years.
Well, anyway, in case you haven't realised, I was very disappointed in it. There was nothing REALLY impressive in it and I hate these goddamm visual effects!!
I mean, the Space ships in the original trilogy look far better than the ultra shiny space ships in this one. Same with Jaws and Deep Blue Sea. Jaws may look fake, but he looks a hell of a lot more real than all these CG sharks in DBS.
Yoda's fight scene was funny, but nothing more. It was as if they had nothing impressive in the film at all so they had him fight as a distraction.
There were some good bits I admit, but the best thing about Star Wars is lightsaber battles - one on one. We got a 20 second battle between Dooku and Obi Won and a 5 second battle between Anakin and Dooku. Then we got Yoda, funny but not as exciting.
The Jango Fett and Obi Won fight was the best bit for me. That was fantastic but then *SPOILER HERE* Jango died far too easily. I don't know what happens in Episode 3 (and I don't want to know) but my guess is that Boba has gotta kill Windu. It was all set up by that one shot where Boba picks up Jango's head. (I was just begging for the head to fall out the bottom of the helmet there! :-D)
And another thing that added to my disappointment was the trailer. When it showed the bit with Anakin with 2 lightsabers, it left you expecting the best damn lightsaber fight ever! But what you saw in the trailer of the double lightsabers, was all you saw in the film! He dropped it after that. There should have been a far longer lightsaber battle between either Dooku and Obi Won or Dooku and Anakin.
Overall, disappointing. Although I did like the Star Destroyers at the end.

Same here. Great movie, but its still not as good as the original three, especially ESB.
> Perhaps George Lucas is getting soft in his old age?
Soft? Nah, he learned his lesson after Jar Jar. I agree though that they could have found a better way to make them fall for each other during some major action scenes, but I guess that was what the ending was about.

On several occasions you see Yoda "seeing Anakin related things through the force" and shaking his head. For example, when Anakin wants to jump off and go for Padme, Obi-wan stops him, but Yoda still senses the fear in him. Also, bear in mind Senator Palpatine/Darth Sidious has kept himself hidden, possibly through his own power, or simply because the dark and light force energies cancel out (a theory suggested in a later book trying to explain how Yoda remained hidden on Dagobah - his energy was cancelled out by the darkness in the cave, was that Count Dooku? I doubt it, but Mr Lucas may want to tie up loose ends). Anyway the point is, if Sidious can remain hidden, perhaps he can shield some of Anakin's transition (after all, he`s already showing a close interest in him).
One final point, there weren`t enough space battles for my liking. The part with Jango pursuing Obi-wan was excellent (especially those seismic charges) but it was just too short.
Anyway, I`m looking forward to Episode 3 now, and Episode 2 on DVD!
