But there was more to it than Nintendo just reclaiming lost territory. Since the collapse of the Sega/Nintendo dominated 16bit era there has been a severe lack of competition in the industry. With more than one serious player now on the market it's going to be a great time for gamers...
Cast your minds back to the 90's. After Nintendo dominated the market with the NES, Sega had to pull out all the guns to snap back at the SNES. So we saw classics like Sonic created to compete for gamers. Sega and Nintendo pumped money into 1st, 2nd and 3rd party developers to make sure they got the best quality games on their console, and gamers were left with the more original, brilliant line up of games seen for a long time.
But after the untimely death of the Saturn and unimpressive sale figures of the N64, the market changed. Sony could afford to stop investment into small development houses, and it was the big players that ruled the market. Gaming just got more monotonous, predictable and boring.
Now, with the return of Nintendo onto the scene things have to change. All 3 manufacturers have begun putting massive amounts of investment into exclusive game development for their consoles, and smaller developers are, for the first time in years, getting a big look into the industry.
Another great time for gamers.
