Who’s contributed what?

Earlier today I was chatting to a friend about the Video-Games industry and how much each of the current four major companies have contributed to it in general. Here I go:

Nintendo: Nintendo. What a company. Nintendo, are the Gods of developing the gaming industry. Just think about it, where would we be without Mario? Mario and his creators advanced gaming beyond what was imaginable in the ‘pre-Mario’ period. With each Mario installment from the begining Nintendo managed to set the benchmark which all developers where trying to at least equal even though it was a near impossible. Nintendo also managed to revolutionize the controller design with their N64 Pad. The completely revolutionary N64 control pad with its ‘tri-handle’ design, the 3D control stick, the shoulder buttons and managing to incorporate so many functions into one controller.

Sega: Sega were Nintendo’s ‘wake up call’ to the world and were the first real competition for Nintendo. Sega indirectly contributed so much to the games industry without us, the consumer or even them realizing, this came in the form of competition. Ever since Sega came along Nintendo started producing some top quality games and Sega following them up with equally impressive games. Sega also developed one of the most revolutionary graphics styles under the name of ‘Cel Shading Graphics’ with Jet Set Radio on the Dreamcast. Sega also pioneered online gaming, with the Dreamcast also being the world’s first gaming specific console to come ready for online play out of the box. Sega where also the first company to introduce the idea of portable gaming from a console in the form of the VMU, although it has been dubbed as a failure by Microsoft who decided against using it for their Xbox it was a fun and welcome addition to any console owner’s collection.

Sony: Although Sony was late to jump onto the gaming bandwagon they still managed to introduce the most people to gaming. They did this by targeting the mass-market with their relatively cheap and wide collection and range of titles for the original Playstation and the Playstation2. This approach introduced people who didn’t have a huge budget for gaming into the industry. Sony was also a blessing for smaller developers, as they were invested in heavily because Sony was not able to produce their own titles at the time.

Microsoft: ‘New kids on the block’ for the industry, but what an impact they’ve managed to make. Although Xbox is by far the most advance console of the big three it is still yet to bring in a big contribution to the industry other than arguments. However, Xbox has leaded the way in including, for the first time, a built in HDD for a console. This is due to bring in more good luck for us consumers since other competitors will take the hint and include HDDs in their future consoles. Another major improvement is the way that Microsoft has not only included internet connection out of the box but also Broadband connection which means that there will not b so much lag as what happened with the Dreamcast’s 56K dial-up connection.

Thanks for Reading,
HHAT

Na†ßu©,
the common perception is that the XBox is a PC and that is how you replied to my post mentioning 'installations and saving to a HDD. You don't actually realise that there is no installation involved and saving to an HDD is just as simple as saving to a Memory Card.

Remember gaming is still really a younger market. i know many adults play now but it is mostly kids. Thats why i think xbox is too much PC like. Kids dont want to keep asking their dad if he could help them do this and that. And thats what the problem is with xbox. It's a bit of a 'older persons console' Dont get me wrong it is a great console but i think the younger gamer likes to be taken through things slowly rather than one big leap at a time. So thats why the PS2 and Game Cube has done better. People want a console to pick up and play games on quickly...not have to muck about with installations and saving to a harddrive. They might aswell get a PC.

Na†ßu©,
So, according to you to much of a good thing can be bad for you?
The reason Microsoft have been so succesful in the world is because they have constantly introduced the latest technology to the
public. Although this may not be the case in the console world Microsoft have still mamanged to introduce the HDD and 'out-of-the-box' broadband into the console world, it was bound to happen.

Each has and is offering good things, but I think Nintendo and Sega are most likeable and innovative.
It was sad to witness the demise of the Dreamcast - it would have brought back some nice memories if Sega and Nintendo were at this moment going head-to-head in the console market.
For me, the Dreamcast and the Gamecube are vey similar in appeal.

Everyone's contributed something, but I personally feel the 'old school' - Ninendo and Sega - have contributed the most. Memorable consoles, unforgettable franchises and classic moments. Sony, deserve credit for their role in introducing gaming to the 'mainstream' market, but they are still relative 'newbies' (lol).

Hmmmm...u really think xbox has made a big impact? i'm not sure i agree.....i mean they always seem to be ahead of the time...introducing too much at once...and people get confused when they have too much....thats why Sony and Nintendo must be praised for taking things one step at a time ie internet and stuff rather than engulfing the gamer with it when they dont want it.
