After many annoying people being told to turn off their light sabres by me (I felt very superior in my seating position), and kicking of the seat of the person in front of me cos they were talking, the movie started. After the usual intro, which was very vague compared to other films, it started. With that annoying star ship from episode 1. Tarn. And then it explodes. Wahay!!! In my good books already.
Here is my opinion of the film...
First things first, for those who don't want it spoilt for them - the film is great, worthy of the Star Wars title. It isn't the boring thing that was Episode 1 (it wasn't very good, but wasn't bad) - and is brilliant in that it sets the scene immaculately. Attack of the clones isn't a good title really since it is more like defense of the clones or 'Attack of the clones (who are actually good guys)'
Firstly, the plot. Queen Armidala is now the senator of blahdiblahdiblah. Somebody wants to kill her; namely Jango Fett. Jango Fett is part of the remnants of the Trade Federation, who are quietly building an army of droids, similar to those seen in Episode 1. Anyway, the Trade Federation will eventually become the Empire, and we all know Anakin will become Darth Vader. Senator Palpatine is in fact Sith somebody (forgot his name), but we all know that (he's the emporer). He talks to Anakin a bit about 'knowing which side to turn to' and the like, but Anakin doesn't turn evil in this film, he just gets frustrated with Obi Wan and being a Jedi and the like.
Obi Wan finds information leading him to a stormy uncharted sea planet where people who clone things live. There, he is mistaken for a messenger to come about the clones. Apparently, 10 years earlier, a jedi (who had died afterwards) had come to these people to get them to build an army of clones for the (good) republic. Since he'd died, they hadn't had word from him, so they mistook Obi Wan for a messenger. Obi Wan relays this message to the Jedi Council, and when Obi Wan, Padme Armidala and Anakin are captured on Jango's home planet, the clones are used in what becomes a massive battle against the trade federation.
- All of the clones are based on Jango Fett, whom Obi Wan found when he went to the planet of the clones-
The clones are what become Stormtroopers, and solves my ever nagging query of where they all came from. Since it was senator Palpatine who had authorised the use of the clone army, I presume he then uses them for his evil ways when he turns wholly evil.
Count Dooku, who is evil, has to escape the planet when the big battle begins, because he has the plans for the Death Star with him. The epic sword fight between him and Obi Wan, Anakin then Yoda is brilliant and since Yoda seems to fly for some of it, and the speed is awesome, it is great and better than any other light sabre battle I've seen.
In the film, I also saw what looked like Star Destroyers, although they also were on the good people's side. The love story between Anakin and Queen Armidala is minute and a sub plot, although it is his love for Armidala which taints his Jedi-ness and want to prove his skill as a Jedi.
It is hard to explain in plot form, but sets many things straight between Episode 1 and 4,5,6. It is also brilliant because of its great special effects and plot, and true Star Wars ness. Jar Jar speaks about three lines, but unfortunately doesn't get killed.
It is a worthy Star Wars film, possibly not as good as the 'true' trilogy, but still a much better affair than Episode 1. You have to see it, because it is just brilliant.
As a side note - you all know I'm from New Zealand - Jango Fett and his (cloned) son Boba Fett are both Maori (native New Zealand people). Quite nifty. I'm not a Maori, but Maori's are from New Zealand just like me.
Ta muchly.
