Modding the console itself can be damaging and even if you don't destroy the console you may find that electrically its not quite as good as it was and you've introduced background distortion to audio or somehow caused a lack of stability.
Gaming can be cheap anyway with originals. I mean look at the dc peanuts to buy and some of the best games ever widely available at less than £10 each. Personally I think everyone should have a dreamcast a truly amazing console.
Lets say your considering getting your xbox modded for pirate games. They want £120 to mod your xbox and then you can buy xbox games for a tenner a time. £120 buys you a lot of dreamcast and games. Sadly most xbox games are poor anyway so all your going to be doing is having a wide selection of cheap crappy xbox games. So you end up paying £300 to get your xbox modded and 18 pirate games to go with it. Of which only 2 of those games are worth playing and you could have bought both for £80 anyway.
So even if like me you don't struggle as much as you should with the moralty of mod chips and pirate games it still maybe a very poor choice to make.
Also there is no actual enjoyment of ownership. An original game is something that looks good up on the shelf. Its stylish, you get a book with a story and full instructions and everything about it is positive. A pirate game is just a plain looking cd no doubt with felt tip writing across the top. Something you'll hide away in a drawer.
So if you go the mod chip route and start feeling the magic is going out of gaming flog on your modded console and go back to an unmodified console with original games it might re-kindle your interest.

Yeah, I suppose some game publishers deserve to be ripped-off. EA and the FIFA games being a prime example.
About going to the cop shop - I'd never shop anyone for copying stuff, I just don't think it's right or "wholesome" that's all.
A few months back I bought a load of copied Dreamcast games and I found myself feeling a bit guilty.
It's down to individual conscience.
Personally I think it can only damage the industry and keep software prices up.

Yea, there are some cheap games on the market. Yea, some can cost as little as a tenner. But so what? After getting a mod chip ALL of your games can be nailed for a tenner and often less.
At the end of the day the games industry is happy to charge you 40 quid for a CD that costs 7p to make, so if there's any way to fight back then go for it.
Everytime I've sold a console, the person buying has always asked me: "Is it chipped?" - Personally I feel like punching them in the face.
I appreciate what the game industry has to offer too much to actively and consciously play a part of the downfall of its future.
