Does anyone know whether or not it is possible to run executables off of a memory stick or any type of media storage device.

Should be fine if you're using them on the same PC you installed with. The issue is registry entries and other installation files for windows. There are *dodgy* versions around that allow you to write registry entries just by clicking a file, but it still involves some files being installed on the PC then.

Very useful things to have on a memory stick:
Utorrent (Torrenting without installing files)
self executable zip program (no install)
codecs for videos
Always carry my 4gb stick around with me, comes in useful.

Portableapps have come along way, and is currently really good, but you are still fairly limited to what you can actually use.
