You might have already heard about this on PM or in the news, but it's so ridiculous it's worth mentioning again here.

CLASSIC cartoons are to be wiped of smoking scenes after regulators ruled they were bad for kids.

Cigarettes will have to be painstakingly painted out of thousands of frames in old favourites like Tom & Jerry and The Flintstones.

Animation giant Turner Broadcasting has volunteered to clean up 1,700 of the famous Hanna-Barbera shows.

Some date back to the 1940s when smoking was considered fashionable.

But as Bugs Bunny would have said: Thats All Folks!

The move comes after ONE viewer complained to broadcasting watchdog Ofcom about two Tom & Jerry episodes shown on childrens channel Boomerang. One shows Tom trying to impress a female moggie by rolling a ciggie with just one hand before smoking it nonchalantly.

The other has Toms opponent in a tennis match puffing a large cigar.

The task faced by animation editors is vast as there are 25 frames per second in the average cartoon.

Ofcoms code states that smoking must not feature in programmes made primarily for children unless there is strong editorial justification.

Turner said: We recognise it is not suitable for cartoons aimed at children to portray smoking in a cool context.

But pro-smokers group FOREST reckoned the toon decision was loony.

Spokesman Neil Rafferty said: Presumably Ofcom has seen how insanely violent these cartoons are but still thinks a few seconds of smoking are more of a threat to children.

It seems the head of Ofcom must have been struck with a falling anvil to come up with a decision like this.

Even anti-smoking group ASH called the move a bit excessive. A spokeswoman said: We dont want to rewrite history.

----

Come on! One viewier? What the hell, how many complaints have they received over the last 60 years about it? This person just had too much time on their hands. Like the pro-smkoing guy said, the violence in some of these cartoons is just as bad but it's only smoking they seem to care about.

Remember that great episode where Jerry floods the kitchen then gets these wires from the freezer and freezes all the water to skate on. How come we haven't heard of any kids electrocuting themselves trying to do that?

I've never smoked in my life and I love watching these shows. I'm sure my kids will too and their kids.

I don't mind smoking on TV or films, like Spirited Away, especially if it adds to the character. You can't airbrush smoking out of history.

Deary Deary Deary me.

I concur ... ridiculous.

Well in a slight change of subject a boy got shot in the eye and died this week, his friend fired an air rifle at him.

Expect air rifles to be banned soon then ... maybe the parents that give their children air rifles are the ones to be banned eh?

Like someone said on PM which is an excellent point, how screwed up is that person if extreme violence towards animals for the 30 minute duration of the cartoon is ok but god forbid they should ever show them smoking.

Because you know, i was so weak willed as a child if i had saw Tom and Jerry smoking i'd have been right down the corner shop asking for a pack of 20 Superkings.

Some people really are so stupid and pathetic they deserve to be shot, preferably from a comedy cannon over a huge cliff and with comic sound effect..."thud"........and then light a cigarette to celebrate

Argh... Soon everything will be banned!BAN LIFE :S

Seems like all you ever hear these days is ban this ban that, dont do this dont do that.

If people want to smoke they will, whether they have seen it in a cartoon or get it pushed in your face by someone else. Youll only do it if you really want too. Just like anything else.

I was wondering when this would happen and I'm not surprised by it at all.

I think it's a stupid idea as I can't see kids taking up smoking by seeing it in cartoons or in films or on TV etc in my opinion the main reason is pressure from friends to try it and then becoming addicted to it, well that's the main reason people who I know who smoke got addicted anyway.
