Sure, we do get some merchndise these days but a lot of it is cheesy, even Nintendos standards have slipped a little recently e.g in dixons you get a Free blow up chair when you buy a Gamecube, oh! but not just any chair oh no! a blow up chair with a Nintendo logo on it, i mean don't get me wrong blow up chairs are ok but you can pick them up for about £1 in various places and they never last, mainly due to cats claws etc {:(
Another classic example was the Free music CD that came with Killer Instinct on the Snes, now that was pretty decent, allthough the worst would have to be the pokemon merchandise in my opinion, ok yeah it sells well but loads of dissillusioned kids buy one figure and then there brainwashed into buying all 250 plus more when the next game comes out! it's madness! even if the GB games are half decent the merchandise is just cheap plastic sold on at inflated prices.
So what can we expect for the future of gaming merchandise? well from Nintendo there is supposedly a limited edition box set which will be released alongside the Zelda OOT remake for GC which I have to admit is quite good as you get a collectable figure, a pocketwatch, a cloth map and an 80 page character art book! as if the 3 disc set was'nt enough this is great for a zelda fan such as myself and many others.
But i was pondering over a potential idea (Nintendo if youre reading this :) which i seriously doubt you are but what the heck ) is the fact that nearly all of us have seen the GC adverts, right? y'know the ones with something different in the glass cube for each advertisement representing each different game, well, would'nt it make sense for Nintendo to produce these glass cubes with either plastic or metal figures inside?
Consider it, they would make great ornaments (obviously you would'nt chuck a glass cube around ;) ) and as long as they would be reasonably priced at say around £2.99 - £4.99 depending on what was in them then people would be sure to buy them, would'nt they? plus it would re-inforce the advertisements and help to broaden there market further, they could even give them away free with certain games to boost sales, surely this is the way forward?
Whatever happens with videogame merchandising i'm sure Nintendo will find more wierd and innovative marketing ploys that tie in with merchandising to get just that little bit more of our hard earned cash, and if they produce something along the lines of my suggestions that would be great (even more great if I copyright the idea, but realistically that won't happen) but one things for sure, it's going to be very interesting the way that they go about it, anyway thanks for reading and discuss! :)

Was that a different way of just typing POP?
Good idea though!
I have a Commodore mug (white, with the logo on it), a Psygnosis mug (black, with a silver Psygnosis owl logo on it), and a tape from WH Smiths called "Datahits", which has remixes of some of the best C64 game themes on it. By "remix" I mean the original music, mixed with a drum machine for somoe extra 'oomph'.
These days, I see little point in the stuff, because basically all it does is gather dust. Though I would like one of the life-size 3D standee's of Lara Croft that some shops have. I tried to blag one from a local store, but they weren't parting with it. Apparently they change hands at a few grand each, as there were only a handful made.
(Hur hur... a handful of Lara Croft... phwoar!)
