Today, for the first time since installing XP on my computer, I have had reason to copy a file from a floppy disk.

The file is a Word document, and is just 53k in size.

Yet it is taking ages to copy. It's been going 5 minutes so far, and the progress bar hasn't even moved.

I'm pretty sure it's not a virus, because I have the latest McAfee software installed. And I know it's not my anti-virus software causing it, because I have the same problem if I shut it down.

Even if I'm not copying files, if I access a floppy drive, the disk continues whirring away once accessed, even if I'm no longer accessing it.

What the hell is going on, and how can I stop it? My floppy drive would appear to be useless at the moment!

Ooookay. Forget about that.

The problem would appear to be that the disk was write-protected.

I've just write-enabled it, and there's no longer a problem. The file copied instantly, and the disk no longer spins continuously. Presumably XP tries constantly to write to the disk, and this causes access conflicts. Great.
