If you were to think of the most addictive and playable game that you've ever played on your PC, would it have been produced in the last few years or not?

To be perfectly honest i dont think that the quality of the games that have been produced in the last few years are as good as the games prior. Undoubtably there have been many advances in games during this period but have they been a step forward or one back? Take for instance Empire Earth, a game only released a few months ago. Obviously the graphics in this game, although not that amazing, are significantly improved over the likes of Warcraft II and Command and Conquer, but could you honestly say that if you were to be locked in a room with no windows and only a PC (without an internet connection...LOL) and one of these games that you would choose Empire Earth over either of the other two?

Although visually enhanced I feel that new RTS games such as Empire Earth have lost there originality and playability. Even the first scenario in Warcraft has more playability than 10000 years in Empire Earth. I think that what went wrong in Empire Earth (in my opinion) is that the makers thought that more is better, however I got to a point in the game were there were just too many options and possibilities for my feeble brain to comprehend! Should I send in a squad of marines to take out the enemy base or just send a plane carrying a nuclear warhead, or perhaps some tanks? Too overly complicated in my opinion!

I myself have never found a game as interesting, playable and replayable as the first X-com game. UFO Enemy Unknown was an incredibly addictive game that even to this day still has me slaying alien hordes as they try to invade earth! Even though the games graphics are showing their age these days I have still not found any game that keeps me coming back to it as much as this game did. Maybe it could be down to my age, as when I first played the game I must only have been 12, but then that wouldnt explain why I am still playing it to this day.

Some would argue that games these days have lost there originality and overall impact due to the fact that there is a lot more media coverage on games these days, whether it be from magazines or the World Wide Web. Knowing the ins and outs of every game before they are released sort of ruins the experience of popping into your local games shop in town on the weekend and browsing through there list of titles not knowing what to expect. I got UFO Enemy Unknown as a surprise for christmas and I had no idea what to expect. Perhaps this could be why this game has had such an impact on me.

Of course games such as Medal Of Honour:Allied Assualt, and most recently Star Wars Jedi Outcast have definately been a step in the right direction for First Person Shooters, when was the last time you bought a good turn based strategy game that will keep you hooked for years? Perhaps we have witnessed the death of games with any lasting appeal and not even noticed!
