Im odd - my fingernails need cutting every week to avoid tearing my flesh whenI scratch. Toenails need doing ever 3-4 months though.
I shattered the little toenail on my right foot last night my smashing it against a door frame. Hurt like hell, then I looked at it and it was all cracked and smashed. I've done the same to the big toe on my left foot also. I can normally get away with 3-4 weeks before I need to. It's just one of those things that you can leave. Now fingernails are a whole different story altogether, being cut every week. I used to leave the nails on my right hand because I played classical guitar...but it didn't help. Once I got a splinter under one of my nails and it wouldn't budge for weeks. The only thing I could have done was prise the nail off, but I didn't want to, so I left it and bits of mushy wood came out. My cousin had an ingrown toenail once and it looked sick. It looked even sicker after it was cut out, though - you could see under where her nail should have been!

I wait until they get long enough that they get caught in my sock and then rip off, thats a good reminder.
