My company has fairly recently introduced this, though it's mostly (but not exclusively) restricted to those at managerial level and upwards.
You can stay at home, dial in, and the system will call you back, allowing you to work over a network connection, almost as if you were in the office.
So certian people, if they don't feel like coming in, can just say "I'm working from home" and that's it. Sometimes it's just for the odd day, but occasionally we don't see them all week.
Which can be a real pain for some people if they need to get hold of them in a hurry.
Last week, one guy rolled in at 10:30am, left 'for lunch' at 12:30, and didn't come back.
Personally, I think it takes the pee.
I'm in a bit of a quiet patch at the moment, with about ten minutes work to do each day. This comes after one hectic two-week period, and before another which starts soon - where there simply aren't enough hours in the day to do what needs to be done, but somehow we manage it.
But I still have to come in to the office and sit there doing nothing for seven hours and 20 minutes - the rest of my working day, not including lunch.
And that's where I think it's ridiculous.
People can be busy, and are happily allowed to work from home. Yet if you have nothing to do, you have to come in.
How stupid is that?
Working from home is bad because I wouldn't get to talk about how bad Moulin Rouge is with the one guy here that watches movies.
> It sounds too easy to be able to skive off to me...
Exactly! And I'm pretty sure many do just that.
I mean, the times you try to reach them on their mobile, and strangely it's unavailable...
I can dial in from home, but the only time I can do work really then is after the customers working day - which I dont get paid for so I dont try and do anything!!
Surely though, if you dial up from home, and then they call you back, you could just leave the computer connected and then sod off for a day out.
