Starting something new isn't easy. And that same thing becomes even more of a challenge as you try to improve yourself and get a better understanding of whatever it is you have taken an interest in.
But if there's one thing that'll keep you interested and highly-motivated in it from start to finnish, it has to be a strong influence from something or someone you look up to.

Take football for example. You could use any other popular sport as an example, but i'll stick with what I know best.
As you'll know, TV occupies a large majority of any kids' life. And despite all the warnings they recieve at the end of their top shows, they still attempt to immitate what they see from their so-called 'heros' in their every-day lives. This applies to football. All they have to do is simply watch one match, take an interest in the fast pace and action, and later simply try to immitate the likes of David Beckham and Laurent Robert with their stunning long range goals.
But of course, they can't!
But still, they continue to practice, and work harder at it untill they get it right. And that could take a good few years, as it doesn't always come 'naturally' to everyone!

You could say that when this happens to any football fan (not just youngsters) that they see this one player as their current 'idol' or 'wannabee', and the same also applies to the team.

With the players, the immitaters will start to watch everything little thing that their idols do, and later try to copy and recreate it in their own back garden. They will believe that they will one day be a regular feature in their national side, and also one day score the winning goal in a Cup Final. And they are all led to believe this will happen by just watching the every move of the footballer(s) you like to watch most.
But when reallity hits them they may realise that they may never actually get that far, and may never even get to experience life at the wrong end of the lower leagues. This can sadly force some people into putting less effort into their game, or even packing it in altogether!
That is a bad thought for the future of football!

When someone realises that they have strong feelings about one team, they will begin to follow this team only, and watch their every move and steps of progress towards the top. No doubt that a large majoritiy of youngsters choose Man United over Scunthorpe and co, on a worldwide scale too!
It may seem like a bad thing by just simply supporting the biggest team around, but it can be a very good thing for the future developments of the young believers. Rather than just day-dreaming about gaining promotion into the Football League alone, thanks to the success of United and co., the thought of playing in an FA Cup or even Champion's League final is something to keep anyone up all night practisising their skills!

Skills are another thing that influence people into joining football.
After watching the likes of Joe Cole in England, or just one of the many talented Brazillian players they will have seen some truly breath-taking stuff!
When anyone sees something like the neck-trap or even some pretty simple ball-juggling it is pretty impressive stuff. And the thought of being able to do that better than everyone else is something to drive people football crazy.

Look at the Brazillian national team, one of the best in the world, and you'll see some of the fanciest flicks and fantastic tricks that could be seen any in the entire Universe!
One reason that Brazillian players, and all other South Americans for that matter, all make it big at such a young age, so efficiently is due to the fact that they do nothing but 'live football' on the streets of the slums from ages of only 5 or 6!
This helps to prove that if you stick with something from a very young age and work hard, keeping at it, you'll be rewarded as you deserve in the future! A massive weekly-wage packet usually applies to most players as a great achievement, with mountains of silverware to follow!
And it's all been thanks to the likes of the great Pelé and Maradona - who these youngsters have looked upto - that they become something great.
And the current crop have the likes of Rivaldo, Denilson and of course, Ronaldo, to immitate and copy to the full extent!

Eveyone is influenced by someone, even if they dis-like that player or team, or even if they claim to have no special feelings towards any side what-so-ever, including their local Clevedon Town!
If any one player has influenced me then it has to be David Beckham. Anyone who's seen me play quite a bit will probably tell you the same.
Not only do I play best in the centre of midfield, but it's mainly for the high-balls and the pin-point accuracy of my crossing that I have been compared to the England captain on many occasions.

Without other players having a strong influence on the younger generation, football would surely begin to collapse and fail miserabley - a bit like Man United's season this year! Without all the flair, action, and fierce rivalry being learnt through the younger years, football today - and in the future - would probably be as dull and excite-less as many on-lookers believe it to be!

Without the players that have been and gone, it would just be a weekly contest between big, dumb barbarians with the intelligence and awareness of a caveman!

Although trying to copy great players that you have seen before because of their flair and skill is true to some extent. You have to realise that some children grow up in the slums and would not have witnessed some of these players before and their football skills come from endless playing and their own ingenuity. That is why Brazilians are the best at attacking but produce no decent defenders( bar that lanky so and so Lucio).
