New information has just been leaked out of the Konami HQ regarding the forthcoming Metal Gear Solid 3 project. Named ‘Metal Gear Solid 3: Supermarket Snake’, it sees our hero fighting the Metal Gear menace in a giant shopping mall. My Japanese is not great, but here’s a rough translation…?

STORY: Set 10 years after ‘Sons of Liberty’, the Metal Gear plans & blueprints have been sold worldwide on the black market, with every major government in the world ordering the machines, and many manufacturing plants situated around the world constructing the robots.
The newest model developed is ‘Metal Gear Ron’. It has five rail-guns, ten Stinger Missile launchers, heat vision, night vision, a camouflage-cloaking device similar to the ‘Predator’, and even comes with fluorescent fluffy dice and leopard skin look seats in the cockpit. Plus, as the previous Metal Gear units have been destroyed by Stinger Missile attacks from Solid Snake, the Metal Gear Ron has a ‘Stinger Disrupter Unit’, which detects enemy stinger missiles and destroys them before damage is done to the unit, meaning Snake must come up with a more imaginative way to defeat his metallic foes.

The Metal Gear Ron is such a mass-demand product in America that they are even being sold in a giant shopping mall, overseen and aided by government officials so they aren’t sold to the wrong people. Similar to the fact that guns are readily available in many countries, the Metal Gear units are the next weapon being bought by crazy psychos addicted to guns and violence.
Solid Snake must continue his mission to eradicate the modern menace that is Metal Gear by infiltrating the mall when it’s closed and destroying the units.
BUT (and there’s always a but!), a crack team of baddies, once again led by Revolver Ocelot (that guy just doesn’t give up…shouldn’t he be living in a retirement home by now?) seize control of the mall when it’s closed, taking the security team prisoner and attempt to steal the Metal Gear Rons.
So Snake must use his sneaky stealth skills to creep around the giant mall, avoiding enemy troops and security cameras (sounds familiar!) When inside the many shops of the mall, Snake must be careful about taking the rations and items found within, as security alarms may sound and alert the guards.

CHARACTERS: Along the way in his epic adventures, Solid Snake has encountered some of the most tough or strange villains ever imaginable, but all of them seem to possess really bizarre or hysterically unfortunate names, but a pre-requisite to any MGS game is the inclusion of the eccentric baddies. Metal Gear Solid 3 will continue this tradition, and here are the characters:

SOLID SNAKE: Our mate Solid is once again the lead in a MGS adventure as Raiden has gone off to be a hairdresser in L.A. He has aged even more since we last saw him, and his dishevelled mullet remains uncut, creating an old Pat Sharp/Limahl hairstyle, he still has an extremely gruff voice, and his scraggy beard is now grey. To help him overcome his addiction to cigarettes, his sneaking suit is now made entirely of nicotine patches, as all the phlegm & associated problems accompanying nicotine addiction was causing him to cough very heavily and disrupt his sneaking missions.
He once again has the ability to hide in cardboard boxes (boxes are found all over the mall), his amazing athletic skill has diminished slightly over the years, but he’s still one of the toughest and quickest 50 year olds around.

OTACON: The loveable nerd was helping Snake to infiltrate the mall by working as a technical advisor to the mall security team, however, when Ocelot and his men stormed the mall and seized control, Otacon was captured and is now being held hostage, so once again, Snake must rescue the poor defenceless wimp.
Otacon, being the highly intelligent computer nerd he is, had also developed his own robot bodyguard called ‘Otabot’, though this was also captured and reprogrammed with orders to kill Snake!
In one section in the game, Snake meets this potential robot assassin in the food court, with a huge ensuing firefight. Snake knows that Otacon has an irrational and paralysing fear of broccoli, and when he programmed the Otabot, he fed in all his personal data into the robots memory unit. Otabots one weakness is broccoli…but can Snake find some in time to use against the evil robot??

VERA SNAKE: Little is known about this mysterious old woman, but she claims to be Snakes mother…is she who she claims to be, or is she Ocelot in drag? Will Otacon fancy her, as he prefers older women?

REVOLVER OCELOT: Ocelot is back to cause more Metal Gear mayhem; nowadays he wears a Hulk Hogan style bandana to hide his receding hair, and still continues to wear a terrible ponytail on his head. Ocelot now finds it very difficult to spin his guns around as he has a crippling arthritis in both hands. He has a powered up mobility scooter for increased movement, wears tweed trousers up to his nipples and has funky Velcro trainers.

GASEOUS SNAKE: Another character who is shrouded in secrecy, and is believed to be another clone of Big Boss. As his name suggests, he has extra special flatulence powers, enabling him to expel huge amounts of noxious fumes from his rear end. He also has the ability to cloak himself in his own fart gas, creating a camouflage effect.

FLAMINGO RIVERA: A wild extrovert, Flamingo dabbles in the art of voodoo and is very handy with the Solid Snake voodoo doll. He is a rather camp man with a penchant for pink safari suits and top hats with big feathers sticking out the top. He loves to do the ‘Moonwalker’ dance and show off as he fights against people.

SIMIAN STRONGUS: The usual clichéd big strong man, but this time he has a slight difference. He was partly cloned from a giant ape giving him strength & swinging abilities, but his human side is well developed giving him great intelligence. He’s 7' tall and built like a brick outhouse
When he's not in the study with the lights dimmed down enjoying good literature, Simian can be found swinging about in his jungle playpen. He can easily be tracked as he reeks of rotten bananas and is constantly malting off piles of ginger fur.
He loves quoting Shakespeare and wears a red fez.

SHAMROCK O’FLANAGAN: A pretty Irish bomb expert, this feisty female is the usual Metal Gear Solid woman character: headstrong, independent, handy with weapons & explosives and falls for Snakes irresistible charms. But is she good or bad? Does she have her own agenda for being in the mall, like stocking up on women’s healthcare products? No doubt there will be plenty of plot twists to go through until we uncover the truth....

ZIMMER WALKER: A very old man (about 120 years old) who is kept alive with various machines and has amazing psychic powers (there’s always one with psychic powers!). Zimmer rides around in a little electric shopping cart and likes drinking milk from a baby’s bottle. Is he somehow related to Revolver Ocelot?....Probably, though there will again be loads of plot twists.

So there’s the story and characters but what about the gameplay? Don’t worry, the usual Metal Gear Solid stealth gameplay will still remain and there will definitely be a boss fight against an attack jet, plenty of cardboard box action, Solid Snake being captured and interrogated, a battle against the Metal Gear units, characters getting killed, hours of cut-scenes and all the other parts that are in every other MGS game.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Supermarket Snake will be released in 2004 on the Nintendo Gamecube & PS3 (the Xbox will probably be dead by then).

I don't really know who to vote for really. There's so many good posters (yourself inlcuded) that it's a tough choice. In the end though it doesn't really matter if your name is gold, purple or red, as everyone has decent stuff to say so it doesn't really bother me.
