So along came Sony in 1995 with the PlayStation, introducing a crop of adult-themed games, something new, and they instantly grabbed attention with their big name. The arrival of something new from someone big instantly grabbed every gamer's attention and was set to make the next Console War or two like something never seen before!
Ninty and Sega finally had competition! :o
Microsoft have also recently ventured into the Console Market after a number of succesfull years keeping PC users more than happy. Their big-name over-shadows the remaining competitors of Nintendo and Sony after Sega dropped out, but their originally giant-sized Price Tag turned too many heads the wrong way, at first. But even with a large fee to pay, the anticipation and excitement over this console has got gamers drooling over it's immense power, and just the thought of another new name in the Gaming World attracts interest from all over the world, in a variety of different ways.
As you can see from this example, whenever the competitiveness between several companies is dying, and new name (prefferably a big one) instantly brings the contest back to life, stronger than any battle ever fought out before!
So we've had Atari, we've had Sega and Nintendo, we've now got Microsoft and Sony. Apart from the laughable names like Sharp and Goodmans, who else is there that is really big enough to come up with enough original and innovative ideas to send a sharp, cold chill down the backs of it's rivals' necks???
I'll tell you who: 'Apple'! Yes, the guys who made the Apple Macs famous as an alternative machine for PC uses - other than the MS machine itself!
All the consoles we've seen before have come up with enough original and exciting ideas to make them who they are today. But without any real game developing experience as to other than the likes of 'Arthur Goes to School', could the guys at the big Apple really have what it takes to introduce a console that would stun all gamers world-wide??
To answer this question you just have to look simply at their past designs and ideas. Look at the i-Macs, and how they remain compact and eye-catchingly designed, yet powerfull, with a world of capabillities to be found using the unique mouse and keyboard designs.
They've come a very long way from the original Apple Macs your mum or someone may have/used to use at work. I've got one sitting to my left. And it doesn't even look half as appealing as me PC, let-alone a colourfull i-Mac! And look at their new designs for the i-Mac 2 - now that's something everyone will need to give a stylish yet futuristic look to at least one room of their homes! And the compact yet simple design of the main computer is something that instantly brings the word 'GameCube' to my mind.
So as you can see, they are more than capable of creating something eye-catching that could show Microsoft how it's not neccesarily 'size' that matters!
Have you ever used an i-Mac's mouse?? The round design may be hard to use a first, but once you've got the hang of it there's really not a lot better for quick point-'n-click access on screen.
Just think of what they could do for a controller!
I'm sure it's something that'd have both Yuji Naka and Shigeru Miyamoto looking on in despair!
Like I said earlier, Apple as a company don't have any real experience with the 'bigger games' of the likes of GTA 3, Half-Life, or any other top Pc titles. Sure, games like these can be found as 'Apple Mac Compatible', but in order to succeed you need to threaten your competition at the Software level, as you cannot rely solely on the appearence and thoughts of your console.
After all, what good is a console if there are no games to play on it???
And Nintendo owe a lotmof their succes to themselevs for their own creations such as the Mario Bros. and the Legend of Zelda alone.
Maybe Apple could team up with Sega for a bit of experience and guidance into the right direction? After all, unless Yuji Naka and co. are hiding something, multi-format games are all Sega have to think about nowadays! So that's one possible solution, and i'm sure that at least one or two other developers would soon follow suit onto the Apple's Core.
It may be too late for Apple to send us a surprise in the current Gaming Generation, but we can always hope something may emerge in another 5 or so years time. But that doesn't neccesarily mean they're out of this generation altogether though! Experience is required in the Games Development field, now would be a better time than any to learn the trade in what is surely the greatest Console Contest to date!
I'm sure that when or if they ever do decide to enter the world that I love best, the i-Mac 3 (or whatever it may be called) will fail to dissapoint and keep this world as we know it a wonderfull place, and take it a lot closer to Gaming Heaven!
They must know they are already missing out on a lot when you compare the sales of games compared to appliances and non-game software.
But maybe they're a company that prefers to keep it all simple, and stay away from the dangers that may come from entering the Console Wars. For instance, they could loose it like Sega.
I still reckon an Apple console would be the best looking one ever, and some game ideas would be nice too.
They surely don't wanna 'give up' to MS altogether now!???
PC's already dominate the Computer Market, why don't they just show Bill Gates that it isn't so easy for them as they may think!
Does anyone remember another mooted console, the Indrema?
