Even eaiser...
Layer 1 - Image 1
Aplly layer mask > hide all. With the gradient too, fill with a B&W linear gradient
Do the same with layer 2, but in the opposite direction. Keep playing with the gradients / Airbrush remebering that black = hide, white = View until your happy... Save a copy for the final out put that way if you need to amend it all you have to do is adjuct the layer masks on each layer.

Method 1.
Click on the layer name and switch it to layer 1
Take the marqee too and drag to area you want as the focus of your image, then invert your selection, set the selection to a feather of 10 or so pixles and the hit the bkspc key, this will feather you imge edges to tranparent...
Method 2.
Add a layer mask to the image,> hide all then airbrush using whit to reveal the area you want, then apply the layer mask? or even subtract it for the original image.
You can also fade the edges using the air brush. Set it to 10% - Fade and work slowly on the edges of your image.
there are hundreds of other ways of doing this... if I think of any more I shall return
thanks...
