My point is Nintendo seem to be playing dangerously. Gambling. Maybe it'll pay off, maybe it won't. Mario looks like it's taking a new direction. That's not a bad thing. But are we going to get a game that gives us rich platform action...? It could well be a great game, but it is a big step giving Mario a backpack to clear up oil and stuff... Will it change the 'classic' platform style? Many would say it won't be the same. Mario will just be shooting water at enemies to kill them, not jumping on them or throwing bob-ombs, shells, etc. at them. It is a big step, I think it'll be a great game, but as Strafex has been saying how Metroid Prime isn't staying true to the Metroid Franchise, the same could be said of this.
You may have thought you could go to the Luigi game for platforming kicks, but it is a kind of ghostbusters stylee game, searching for Boos and other ghosties in a haunted house and sucking them into a vacuum. No latforming joy there then. Again, supposedly a great game (I have yet to play) but it's moving away from what Nintendo are traditionally good at.
And Metroid. Many people *looks at Strafex* say it will not be a 'proper' sequel (or prequel or whatever...) because it hardly uses any of the features of old. No grappling hook, the ball rolling is being called a gimmick, etc. The other side is that people say Metroid will have an atmosphere to match the previous games, making it feel like the same series...
Zelda may not be taking a new gameplay direction, but the graphical direction change has certainly upset fans of the more realistic style of the N64 versions. We have yet to see how gameplay will (if at all) be affected, certainly the interface looks similar to the N64 games, but looks can be deceptive...
F- Zero we have yet to hear any gameplay details about, but Nintendo is again giving a major liscense to a third party. If the gameplay is changed too much no doubt there will be cries of the game being 'bastardized' (yes, that IS a technical term) by Sega.
And Star Fox is being co-developed by Namco. Now having other companies develop titles isn't a bad thing. It can bring new ideas to a franchise. But these are vital franchises to Nintendo. First off, if someone else screws up a Ninty franchise, Ninty are screwed (it's a vicious circle). Second, any major changes a third party brings to the title will almost undoubtedly displease some fans who will feel the franchise is no longer staying true to what it was. And most Nintendo developed franchises seem to be taking a different direction to their prequels, while many others are being given to third parties who may well change them (for better or worse) and annoy many fans of earlier incarnations.
Change is good. But too much too quick may be damaging. And who here can honestly say they wouldn't like to play a Mario GC game that is practically Mario 64 with new levels, better graphics and a few new power ups/ moves...? I certainly wouldn't mind, Nintendo are doing enough new things with old and new franchises, they don't HAVE to do it with every game...
Congratulations of you read all that. Have a peach for your trouble.
And also, Wario World sounds very promising. The original GB Wario Land ws great, although I have never played the others in the series... I think the 'Can't die' aspect of them put me off, rightly or wrongly I don't know... However, hopefully it'll contain some crazy power ups for Wario and some great platforming action.
> They're busy with Mario Kart, Wario world, Mario sunshine, Zelda and
> i'm sure a few more.
But does this warrant giving masses of games away? Metroid, Starfox (twice), Fzero, Zelda GB games...
What worries me is the disaster that is Metroid. After months of development, Shigsy had to publically announce that it was a disaster and they had to start again from scratch...
Now, let's think about a few things. Nintendo have one of the biggest in house development teams in the world. They can make over a dozen games simaltaneously. So, what are they doing?
If they're giving away Star Fox, Metroid, F-zero, other starfox, etc, then surely they must be working on some big games- yet all I've seen is a few Marios and Zelda. What is going on?
