So is this the end of Pokemon? It certainly seems so. This forum hasn't had any other posts today, and those here are along the lines of "Pokemon Sucks", and "Close this forum". Anyone seen in public playing anything to do with Pokemon will be excluded from the rest of society.

Go into any gaming shop and you'll see at least one pre-owned Pokemon game - it seems that nobody wants to have anything to do with the craze anymore. I almost pity the people who paid hundreds of pounds for First edition Charizard cards - by all accounts, they're impossible to sell.

The success of the original Pokemon games, as well as the trading card game, meant that this decline was almost inevitable. But is this really fair on the little devils?

I don't think so. When the first games came out, I was wowed over by the gameplay, not by any sort of craze. I enjoyed Pokemon Blue as a game - and a very good game, but just a game.

Having said that, I was first in the queue to get rid of the game about a year ago. Perhaps the first failure of Pokemon was the lack of replay value. When the idea was cool and popular, people were prepared to spend hours in the monotonous task of catching more of the little blighters, but, frankly, it becomes incredibly dull, incredibly quickly.

But the biggest failing of the franchise is that it seemed to be there to make money for everyone other than those buying it. Many people, including small children, were encourage to buy both of the two, practically identical games, and the release of Yellow just added to the ridicule. The card game was also ridiculously expensive to play, and the films are the most useless things ever created.

At the time, people were prepared to ignore these things - because it was cool to be into Pokemon, but you can see why the demise began. The release of Gold and Silver was of a lower key, and games like Pokemon Stadium 2, and the recent Pokemon Mini have met almost no publicity. As yet more films are announced, no one goes to see them. As a GBA game is announced, people are uninterested because it looks like the GBC games with shadows. Pokemon seems to be about 3 years behind the rest of the world when it comes to technology.

There was nothing wrong with the original games. They were fun, and interesting to play. But the franchising that came with it, in my opinion, resulted in its death.

So is Pokemon truly dead? I believe so. Yes, there is a GBA game coming out. Yes, there is a new film. But the number of people who want to spend yet more money on those are the few people who still believe that £120 was a fair price for a piece of cardboard.

I don't believe that most of the posts in this forum are fair. I think this forum should stay, for nostalgia, if nothing else. And Pokemon doesn't suck - What "sucks" is the exploitation of both the game playing public, and of the Pokemon games themselves, by bosses who care only about their own wallets.

That's probably true.

There are still some "hardcore" fans around, though. I have a friend who had most Pokemon things six months before the rest of the UK, and he still plays them a lot. He's also into Dragonball Z now, but the Pokemon stuff still gets used all the time. For many people, Pokemon is dead - but I'm sure this person isn't the only fan.

The latest issue of Nintendo Official Magazine has a letter from someone asking why Pokemon cards aren't sold in shops anymore, and there were a couple more letters last month regarding Pokemon Advance, so I think we can safely say that there are a few more sales to be made. The days when Pokemon was truly alive, however, do seem to have passed.

I'm not really complaining, ;-)

See Ya ;-)
