You've managed to solve problem number one, the non-detected hard-disk. It's now appearing every single time after I rejigged the drives. The only problem was that i had to activate Windows XP by phoning Microsoft up after the stupid thing decided that my hardware configuration was too different. So I phoned up and the bloke went "err err can you phone back in half an hour the systems have gone down." This was at 11:45pm. So dutifully I phoned back and and I got a bloody answerphone message saying the lines closed at midnight, the bastad.

But they did activate it this morning, so everything's hunky dory.

I think you've also inadvertently solved the freezing problem. Previously my hard drives were on top of each other in seperate 3.5" bays, but in order to put them on seperate busses I had to move one drive into a 5.25" bay. The strange thing was that when I took it out it was very hot, as in burnt finger hot. But now it has the spacious luxury of a 5.25" bay it seems to be maintaining a touchable temperature, and it looks a lot better ventilated, which might help.

But anyway, thank you muchly for solving what was a nightmarishly annoying problem. You've gained my notable vote for the next election for your public spirited computer help service. Sure beats taking your PC to PC world and having them format everything, report you to the police for haivng illegal software and give it back in a worse state than it was before, all for the bargain proce of £20 :-)

Thanks again.
