I will soon be purchasing a widescreen telly. Yay! ( still haven't decided which one - seen a good deal on a Panasonic TX32PL1, any opinions warmly received).

What difference will this make to my PS2 experience? Do all games support Widescreen? And most importantly, how does Pro Evo look in widescreen?

Tell me I have a brave new world ahead of me!! Or do I?

Most games don't support widescreen but because alot of games have slight NTSC->PAL borders you can adjust it to fit. btw Gran Turismo looks stunning in widescreen :-D

To expand on what Wookiee said about Smart tv, its basically this:

The picture has a tiny sliver of the top and bottom shaved off. With almost all programs, this is not a problem as most subtitles and action is kept within the main part of the screen. The picture is then stretched slightly horizontally, but nowhere near as much as with a widescreen picture. Its basically "immitation 4:3 on a 16:9 screen", and I watch most tv this way, as it looks perfectly normal, except when you`re watching something like sumo wrestling.

Games like Half Life, Gran Turismo 3 and a lot of others all support widescreen mode, but as Wookiee says, some don`t. With the varying screen modes available though, its usually quite easy to find one that works.

One major advantage is the "zoom" mode, which allows you to completely chop off the top and bottom of the picture, so that its now in widescreen. This may seem drastic, but a lot of films and stuff these days are displayed as letter box presentations, so I find myself frequently using the zoom function. On top of that, and this is the best bit, sloppy PAL conversions (ask Capcom for some examples) the zoom mode allows you to chop off those nasty black borders that everyone complains about, making it the perfect tv for your PS2.

Not all games support widescreen... and Pro Evo has "fat" players in widescreen, as it doesn't support it.

I have a Sony WEGA widescreen, and you can switch the picture betweenmodes: 4:3, 14:9, Zoom, Wide and Smart (somewhere between Zoom and Wide).

When games do support it, it's great; but if they don't, I just switch modes to whichever looks best.
