Many gamers fall into the trap. I know how to avoid it, and its usually the casual masses that do it. The trap of negativity, where everything is wrong, brand names are right and only games with the cool image are allowed. And why are these people totally anti whats good and whatnot? Publicity. Magazines. And general lack of enthusiasm.
I bought an Xbox with the sole intention of being able to play games on it. Not for the hard drive, the broadband capabilities or, being a popular reason on its own, for Halo. I bought it to use as a gamesplaying device because that is what I like to do with my spare time. And unlike many people, my decision wasn't altered by all the negative hype.
Why oh why, pray tell me, is the Xbox a PC in a box. What makes it a PC? Is it because its graphics chip is made by NVidia? Because it isn't made by NVidia, just developed by them. And if using PC brand names makes a console a PC, then the GameCube ought to be one of these whirring great machines as well considering it has IBM processor.
It has got a hard drive. I don't consider this to be essential to heighten the gameplaying experience, yet the first company to announce a hard drive add on was Sony with the PlayStation 2. So Xbox isn't the originator of this, but it doesn't make the Xbox a PC. The PlayStation 2 is just as PC-ish.
As for internet capabilities, online is apparently the future, so no comment can be passed there. And every console, PS2 Xbox and GC will all have keyboard and mouse peripherals, so these things don't make the Xbox a PC either.
Its all the negative, pointless untrue hype which has made Xbox not a very big hit in this country, and gives all the other console lovers reason or excuse as to why this is so. And it is pure negative trash, spewed by tabloids, and anti Microsoft people. Don't fall into the trap of calling a console crap, because never can that statement be true (bar the Virtual Boy).
And whats wrong with a bit of originality. My friend called Mad Maestro crap because it was merely different. It has an original concept, great music and is really fun and refreshing to play. Yet because of this, my mate thinks it is terrible and prefers to play the 'original' (his words, not mine) Metal Gear Solid 2. And MGS2 is a great game, but not original. This is such a bad attitude to take on games, and I believe that we should welcome these 'kooky' Japanese games with open arms since they offer originality and a great time. Remember, Rez was made in Japan. Could you imagine any western developer making something similar on the refreshing scale?
And what angers me is all this stupid pointless 'console wars' talk. It isn't console wars, its petty arguments between the people who'd rather play with Mario and the people who'd rather play with Solid Snake. Grow Up. The GameCube is awesome, the Xbox great and the PS2 has a great selection of games. No console is better or worse when it comes to games, and the only thing which you could get a valid debate out of is system specifications. Which of course is ludicrously pointless since its the games that make or break a console, not how many gigapixels it can multi-texture every nanosecond.
A biased opinion is not a bad thing, constructive criticism is a welcome fact, but petty argument between one fifteen year old boy at one end of the line and an eight year old boy who still collects Pokemon cards is not a 'console war'. Thanks guys, and I agree about it all being started by magazines, although there are lots of kids nowadays who go around shouting unbased rumours to everybody. I remember hearing one kid saying that Mario was on the PS2... Heh heh, some people will never learn.
I wholeheartedly agree with you - whilst I do believe that one console is technically superior (and no I won't divulge that information), that doesn't mean to say the others are rubbish, as they certainly aren't. If you ask me, this whole console 'war' has been created by magazines.
