Living in a modern world of high quality computer games, it has recently come to my attention that many gamers fall into the category which I like to label; "Cheaters".

Personally, i like to play a game and complete it fully before i resort to using any cheats or codes. Yet other gamers cannot wait to use such cheats and are cheating their way through the game as soon as it is out of the box and in the machine.

After talking to my friend Dan the other day, I realsied that he was a 'Cheater'. Our discussion had turned to two games in particular: GT3 and GTA3 on the Playstation 2. I asked him how far he'd got on GTA3 to which he replied "Oh i've completed it, it was dead easy. I just kept using cheats for infinite health and shields, the tank, etc...". I then queried what percentage of GT3 he had completed, to which he also replied "Quite a lot cos i used a cheat and got loads of money so i bought all the best cars". I asked him why he used cheats and said that I thought it made the game a waste of money if there was no challenge. His weak arguement was that everyone uses cheats eventually, so why not sooner than later...?

Don't get me wrong, i'm definitely not criticising all forms of cheating. If we get very stuck on a game, then we may use a walkthrough guide. After all, if we didn't do this we'd probably get so annoyed with the game that we'd give up on it altogether.

Most of us also seek hints, which can also be very useful as they are not outright cheats, they simply enable us to play the game with more skill. Hints may tell us how to reload guns more efficiently or how to make more successful passes in a football game.

However, cheating from the word go means that your brand new game is no longer a challenge and completing it is much easier and quicker. It is as if some gamers are scared to face the challenge of an engrossing game. As avid gamers, i'm sure few of you reading this fall into the catergory of 'Cheaters'.

What do you all think? My personal opinion is that cheating should be used as a last resort or after a game is completed and cheats can increase it's longevity.

Thanks for Reading.

I tried it once on Tony Hawks - I couldnt get the Pro Skater score for one of the levels and couldnt unlcok the last two so I stuck in a cheat code I found which unlocked everything and huh.... there was nothing else to do. It was suddenly pointless.

There is a place for cheats and hints etc when you get stuck but be careful which cheats/hints you use as the game can be totally spoilt from there on in.

I certainly learnt how pointless they can be.

there are two forms of cheating:

1) purposefully inputting "codes" or something similar to get extras.

2) taking advantage of a bug or loophole in the game or its design to your advantage.

The first one I think, should be reserved for either after you have completed a game, or as an alternative save game. Every game should be played to its conclusion without hard coded assistance.

The second, an example of which is in Final Fantasy 7 where you can go on a certain beach where a certain earth worm can be found that uses only earth based attacks; you equip you party with earth absorbing materia, and fury rings, and walk away for a few hours, with an object pressed on the direction button to keep the party moving while not in combat mode. With no way of actually harming your party, and the fury rings making your party attack constantly, you can get a lot of experience and ability points, at no cost. This isn't cheating in essence, this is being tactical, and using the way the game is put together to your best advantage. Some people call it cheating, but only because they would never have thought of it themselves.

Nice post - I'm inclined to agree with you on this one. Cheaters should die.

Or at least complete the game first.
