I was 8 years old, never been to a football match, in fact had never remotely been interested in football. I was dragged along by my dad to see a local side called Stevenage Borugh. Expecting a glamourous all-seater stadium I was disappointed to be greeted by a couple of dodgy stands and “gregs hot-dog stall”. Since that day many things have changed. One is the fact that I have experienced the highs of winning the league in 96, thrashing our rivals woking 5-0 (sorry mandatare!) and the lows of mid-table mediocracy. Ive now been to over 100 games and have madly fallen in love with a team I once regarded as “money wasted” when I was eight. The stadium is now almost all-seater, “gregs hot-dog stall” is now a successful bar/restaurant. Things are looking up.
So why am I writing this now? Well after years of money, effort and time ive never actually seen us win a trophy for it. we did win the championship a while back, but I was not able to get to the game. So our venture into the FA Trophy competition has brought great happiness recently.
The conference is a supremely underrated league. Im sure Mandatare will agree, that the standard of football is close to that of division 3 and even perhaps division 2, in fact I saw the division 3 play-off final this year was played out by 2 ex-conference sides, rushden a Cheltenham. This just proves we can compete. But the one thing that really annoys me is the fact that it is so overlooked.
So my tickets have finally arrived and I am off to Villa Park on Sunday. With all the over-paid superstars and ronaldos etc im sure you are not interested in postmen having a kick about, but I strongly advise you see this game on sky sports at midday on Sunday. It will be an absolute cracker. Hopefully it will get Conference Football a little more talked about.
So happy viewing people. Can I trust you guys will be watching? Well, I sincerely hope so.
> what channel is it on i might watch it
