The gaming charts are bracing themselves for an onslaught, as soon Square will launch a full offensive with Final Fantasy IX, and the Square-fanatics who have been awaiting this game are starting to get excited, the prospect of a return to the classical roots, of dark mages, and magicians, seem to have been heralded by outcry from the gamers that were around, when King Edgar Locke, and there companions were saving the earth in Final Fantasy 3 (Six really), or when the crystals were stolen in 2. Square found that the die hard Final Fantasy fans didn’t like the machines and futuristic weapons Barrett, Cloud, Seifer and Squall used whilst saving the world, and in answer to the pleas from many fans they responded and didn’t let them down. But what is this that I hear, again the gamers are revolting the news of an tenth sequel, Final Fantasy XI being completely on-line has led to much protesting and campaigning. And understandably so, fans should have on-line gaming as an option, you could get someone in your team if you choose but you should also be able to play the game as a solo player in the traditional approach. Lobbying of Square saw them answer calls for a return to it’s roots, will Square answer the players and give them a solo Final Fantasy XI with an on-line option. We can only hope.

But in future will the industry pay attention to the gamers. How many times have suggestions been overlooked for a game that could have improved it? I know that many companies listen to players, EIDOS did with Championship Manager for example. But I am hoping that in future, developers may place more importance on consumer opinion as a whole. Questionnaires or surveys which could see what people want included in the games they buy, or areas on a website where ideas can be posted. That way they can truly give the people the games they want, and hopefully it would lead to more creative games and unique ideas coming through.

But for the time being let’s hope that square will act quickly and give fans a listening ear. The same people that will buy Final Fantasy IX, X, XI, as well as XII, XIII…
