Graeme Souness has revealed he turned down a chance to buy Eric Cantona while he was manager of Liverpool.

The offer to buy Cantona came from Michel Platini, following Liverpool's 1991 Uefa Cup win over Auxerre.

But Souness told Platini he did not want any "problem players".

The ex-Liverpool boss told Liverpool's official website: "Michel Platini said he had a player for me, a player who'd had some problems back in France but who would love to come and play for Liverpool.

"That player was Eric Cantona. But at that time we didn't really need any more problems, so that was one that got away."

Just months after being turned down by Souness, Cantona joined Leeds United, then Manchester United.

Asked if he now regretted his decision, Souness said: "When you think of what he went on to do, then yes most definitely."

how little things can change the balance....

Cantona was da man. First season with Leeds United...what did he do? Win them the old first Division. Proper class. Also remember him bangin in a hat-trick against Liverpool in the charity shield. Class.

THen we all know what he went on to do at Man United :) But I'll tell ya anyway :) The double double :) In fact he won the premiership every single season except for the season in which he was suspended for "le kick"

"66 was a great year for English football, Eric was born"

know dat!

Sorry, in a real nostalgic mood today..anyway catch that program about Englands trip to Mexico in 1986? :)

Idiot!
This statement is also shown by the fact that he's also not doing all he can to keep Duff from leaving Ewood Park this summer!
Surely without him, they will drop down!
