What a mess the stock market is in just now - its a shocker
The SocGen stuff wasn't the only cause, sure, but it more than likely tipped the scales of an already faultering stock market.
As for whether the bloke was really singularly guilty, we'll never really know, but it does happen (despite safety checks being in place).
Even at a vendor level here, we can influence quite a bit if we get stuff wrong, though not quite at that scale.

I read in the paper the other week that the SocGen thing is a bit of a cover up, with Jerome Kerviel being used as a scapegoat.
I'm reading an interesting book at the moment called Ugly American$ by a bloke called Ben Mezrich. It's about the stock market trades in the far east and it's set against the Nick Leeson thing.
Based on true events, apparently, it a similar vein to his Bringing Down the House book, which is also a top read.

The worst thing is that part of it is largely due to one employee in a large French organisation (SocGen) mucking up.
The Sub-Prime Mortgage issues are also a bit of a problem, both in the US and Europe. There's a lot of cleaning up to do and it may well get worse before it gets better. Talk of recession isn't uncommon at the moment.
