The Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy Director is going to be taking the director's chair for the prequel to the Lord of the Rings. Jackson will take a back seat as executive Director on the 2 films.
The Hobbit will comprise one film telling the story from the original novel and another set during and just after the Fellowship, where Bilbo Baggins has a part to play in delivering the ring to the elves in order for Frodo to end up taking it on his quest.
Del Toro has a good body of work behind him, so things look good. It will be interesting to see if the film differs in feel from the LOTR trilogy though.
