Sometime last month in the week before I went to Greece with school, a girl in my class had a GBA with Sonic Advance. I went mental (you know this story). So, I went to Greece, got myself a cheap GBA+Sonic and spent the next 3 weeks of my life in a 4" screen. During this time I pined for Sonic 2, 3 & Knuckles, because Sonic Advance was pants in comparison. So, I dug out my old MegaDrive II, re-aquired my Sonic games (I foolishly sold them) at great expense and started playing them. Lots. Now, I've completed S3&K, (not all emeralds yet though), and have cime up with the perfect game. This will truly rule:
-={Sonic Evolution}=-
Style: 2D. 2D is the pivotal part of the whole game. The play must be in 2 dimensions at any one time, although not necessarily the graphics. What I mean is, it'll be like Klonoa and Pandemonium, so that the play is in 2 dimensions yet the environment is 3D, the camera moves a bt and generally keeps things interesting. Basically, I'm thinking Sonic 3 & Knuckles here, but given the 128-bit makeover, just so it sells, besides, a bit of eye candy (and what eye candy it'll be!) never goes amiss, despite what Dringo says.
Graphics: As above, 2D. What I'm after is really detailed models, and speed. I also want the environments to look cartoon-real, like the Sonic games. They weren't cartoons, they weren't realistic, kinda... Anime. That's it, 3D anime with a hint of realism. I want great fire effects, convincing water, bright colour and lots of attention to detail. I also want the camera to tilt forwards when sonic Moves really fast, maybe eventually moving right behind at top-speed. I also want motion blue, motionblue is good, especially when Sonic breaks the sound barrier or has invincibility. Also, in the original Sonics, the graphics were art, y'know? Everything looked really good, that's how I want Sonic Evolution to be like. Stirring images, grand canyons, vast cityscapes, huge landscapes and really good lighting. And not just good background either, there should be foreground detail too, trees in teh way, a pillar, lava fall, both aesthetic at times and also an obstacle, to obstruct vision.
Gameplay: As I said, 2D. Just the same as the old Sonics really. Lots of good speed, loops, and interesting features like swings, elevators, pop-up springs and the like as seen in Sonic & Knuckles. I think the special moves and shields that Sonic has at the moment would be left unchanged, although maybe more or "super-shields" would be good. These allow you any number of hits for a period of time (although not invincible!) They should provide special attacks, or just one single attack, like a fireball around your radius on a double jump. I also want special 3rd-person sections, where you dodge blocks or fireballs or something while chasing Robotnik. That would be really cool, and add a lot of depth. Multiple routes, also, wher you have to choose which way LEFT or RIGHT you want to go, not just up or down. This would be best implemented in mystic-cave style levels.
Special Stages: For this I thought Tails could catch Sonic in his jet-plane, and Sonic has to fly around the screen getting rings, a bit like Sonic Advance's special stages, but with momentum, turbulence, fog etc... Either that or maybe, Super Monkey Ball with Sonic inside?
Sound: This is important. It should have pretty much the same SFX as the originals, but with extras: I want there to be a whooshing sound when Sonic goes really fast, sonic booms when he breaks the sound barrier, footsteps, rustling and general surroundings sounds. However, Sonic's jumping sound is very important, that MUST remain the same.
Music: Also important. Sonic & Knuckles had great tunes, simply great. I want songs in the same style, but with today's high quality standards. I also think there should be an option for some modern techno/funk/rock for those who can't stand good tunes. Remember, sound bites from previous games is a very important tradition!
Lifespan: Massive. Very important too. This game must be long, at whatever cost, Also, hard. The other Sonic games have been very easy to initially complete. It may be a platformer, but it's not aimed at 10 year olds any more. Mini-games and challenges is good too, along with those extra stages with the checkpoints.
Multiplayer: There really should be a co-operative option apart from the "grab player 2 and control tails" option. I'm thinking Half-Life Decay here, a small new section of the game that requires teamwork to get through, plus a tournament mode, standard race/collect rings and others. Party play would be a big plus here.
Rewards: Well, what else could there be? Unlocking Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Nuckles for completing the game with each character (Sonic, Sonic & Tails, Tails and Knuckles. Spot the pattern?)
Best game ever, if it were a reality? I think it would be and moreso easily, if pulled off by a semi-decent team with vision. Well, that's the current Sonic Team out of the running for now then.
Thoughts?

Bah! Give me Sonic 1 on the Master System anyday... ;0)
The next Sonic Adventure should consist of "Sonic Speed Levels Only".
Sonic Team should forget all the other characters (except in the story) and just let Sonic fans play what they REALLY WANT to play - i.e. Sonic Speed Levels.
Sonic Adventure 2 had some of the best Speed levels of any Sonic game.
If I was in control of development at Sonic Team, that's what I'd do, and I'd call the game "Sonic Adventure Free" (instead of Sonic Adventure 3).
Christ I'd even buy a GameCube to play that!

Write this in the retro games forum? Actually don't do that cause no onw goes there much.
Sounds like a cool game though some guy came up with a peeping tom game where your mission is to go round taking photos which is still the best idea I have heard.
The good thing about your idea is that it would be accessable to all age groups.
