now before anyone says something i am putting this in this room because i need a responce. ok!
2 questions
1. Can anyone reakomend a good portable modem that i could put into my laptops PCMCIA card socket? the laptop has 2 of these card holder sockets.
2. Do you need any phone line upgrade for ISDN? will it work on an ordinary line if you have the correct modem and software?

ISDN needs a new phone line I believe, among other things, which justifies the usually hefty installation fee. Though i have heard interesting rumours regarding a DIY ISDN installation kit, where you are given everything you need to put an ISDN line in, but no engineer to help you do it.

1. Have no idea.
2. As IDSN quite often runs in dual channels and all the rest of it, I'd expect that you have to buy an entirely new modem, which go for a reasonable price. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if SR stock them. Ah, here we are mate, a 'INTERNAL ISDN ADAPTER FOR PC' :
