The cube is finally out this week and with it comes the final leg of the next generation console race. At the moment PS2 is clearly showing its widely established fan base and leading all the way, in all territories. Microsoft's X-Box the hyped up new comer did create a stir before entering but lagged somewhat after a very surprising low sale start. It seemed to be staggering all the way from the line everywhere apart from its home land America where sales picked up enough to call its release a 'success' in that area. Although its sales in America were good the year and a half old PS2 still remained firmly in its top spot of the sale charts. The more force less effort approach of the Americans obviously doesn't gain the kind of result that Japanese time consuming precession offers.

Anyway, the X-Box has established its life in Europe and indeed the world be it a very unsteady life to lead. Hot on its heels is the next big, or should I say small, very small even, home entertainment system, Game Cube. Here we see a new Japanese effort from console giants Nintendo. They've been in the business a long time and know how to treat the market, I myself am very impressed with their PS2 power beating console, especially when it enters the market at an eye catching £130. What it offers is slightly less than its rivals, be it without DVD or CD playback, however what it offers instead is a cheap, new, Nintendo driven gaming console which if we go by past experience (Ignore the N64) will prove interesting all the way. A great line up of games straight from the word go will keep punters happy while great titles like the new Mario Kart and Meteroid games are in the pipeline. Its all round approach of offering games for both children and adults should keep sales high and interest young and old gamers alike, offering something for everyone is an obvious way to go about things these days as the market is clearly larger than what it has been before, everyone plays games!

Ok that's enough about the console and what it offers, what we need to know is how it will effect the market, well here's my prediction. Following X-Box's early price drop which clearly shows their uncertainty of its future, sales will pick up but not a great deal, in my mind people have already set there hearts on the cheaper Gamecube and with the extra £30 drop I don't think they'll be changing their mind. PS2 sales however will continue to be lead even after the Cube's launch proving that Sony has hold of the console market.

Now saying that doesn't mean that the Cube wont have a good release, after a frantic rush through week one it will set itself firmly in second place where it belongs and realistically where Nintendo expects it to be. An all over family approach to things will in the end offer a good life to the cube and make a nice revenue for Nintendo, however Sony will win again and its hold on the market clearly shows it knows something the rest don't, what exactly gamers want. All this aside I will still be purchasing a Cube and Star Wars Rogue Leader to accompany it, I plan to have a broad range of titles in my household and owning a PS2 and Cube will offer me exactly what I'm after.

I disagree but then I would!

To be honest, as an X Box owner, I don't care how many other people are playing superb games like Halo, RalliSport Challenge, Fifa 2002 World Cup, Jet Set Radio Future, Dead or Alive 3, Project Gotham Amped and Oddworld - I've been playing some of these for the best part of a month now and I'm dead impressed.

Sadly the X Box did crash on me last night, when I was beating France 4-3, with 14 minutes to go, in the World Cup 2nd stage, but hey - I took a photo so I know it happened !

Game Cube is great sure, PS2 is selling well - I'm playing some of the most original and without doubt best looking titles around.

Racing on ice in a Subaru Impreza WRX to Paul Simon's Graceland - can't do that on any other console!

Anyway,
