The plot of a game.

Over the years I have seen some really great, involving, tragic and tense plots, one prime example being Half-Life. If I remember correctly, Half-Life didn't have any cut-sequences and for me, thats the main "easy" way of telling us, the players, whats going on.

So how are plots explained through cut-sequences? You can see whats going on without actually being there. Secret meetings, transportations of guns, drugs, shipments of chemical equipment suitable for making zombies and so forth.

This is how the plot is easily explained and you can follow it without much rocket science brain cells and because the plot is explained this way, you can carefully examine how good the plot actually is. If the plot is easily explained, doesn't that sort of ruin the game?

Well, there is another sort of plot explaining method, which is used by the fine Half-Life, the plot was explained without cut-sequences. How is this possible? Well, information was gathered by you talking to people and somehow, the plot was really quite easy, when you knew. But it was always carefully hidden until the very last moment, which is how it should be, it should keep you guessing all the way, and then when you think you've worked it all out, example: Dr-X killed your wife and he's planning to kill your family. Well, you'd be wrong, it was actually Dr-Y and your wife was shot randomly and your family is already dead.

Shocked? Hell yeah!

But, how would we like the plot explained? I like cut-sequences, they can explain the plot easily and they can easily mislead you. And if done well they can look amazing, but thats not the point!

Also you then have the problem of developers spending all their time making cut-scene's and not enough on the actual "game" or you could get developers who get a bit carried away and make the plot so complex that you have to have huge cut-scenes. Anyone for Metal Gear Solid 2? There was one about 45mins long wasn't there?

Ok, a minute is long, but 45?! That is taking the mick.

How about a new way to "describe" the plot, by either just not having one, or. Making a new way. I have explained the only 2 I know, but im sure that developers could make a new way. I AM SURE.

I want new things. The things we have are not, boring, but I think they are just old methods with pretty pink frills over them. Why not think up some new idea's? Hm? HM?! HM?!?!

I also have a little rap thanking SR for GAD. I ain't no Snoop Dogg so say nice things!
